Starter question (differences between Auto and Manual ones)

The 5-speed swap is all complete and I just have to bolt back in the starter.

My question however is that with the starter for the Automatic there is only one wire that that then goes to the Starter Solenoid.

On the starter that I bought with 5-speed parts, the starter has TWO wires = one is a direct positive (+) to the battery (red cover says 12V+) and then there is a smaller guage wire (Im assuming a ground....?)

What should I do with the wire I have coming from the Starter Solenoid (the single wire that was with the Auto starter)..........AND.........what should I do with the two wires for the Manual starter???

Should I just get a battery cable and connect it directly to the positive (+) battery terminal and then use the other as a ground?????

thanks -- have a good one :flag:

thats really weird I haven't seen one on any of these cars with 2 wires. Are you sure you got the right part number? Post the number on the box and where you bought it from and I'll see if I have a book on it.
It sounds like you got a later model starter with a starter mounted solenoid.

Well the starter came off of the '90 (or '91) 4-banger that the guy was converting to a 5.0 --- I never looked at the starters when I bought the 5-speed swap parts until today when I was finishing up and trying to put the starter in

Worst case scenario, I just go down to Auto Zone and ask if they have a starter for an '88 2.3 with a 5-speed in stock --- I figured though that the starter I got with the conversion pieces would just go right in haha

If its a starter for a 91-93 mustang keep it :nice: They are usualy smaller and have less wireing I think than the older ones. Also I think they come with a removeable solenoid on them as well where the older ones didn't.

The starter you are speaking of is a high-torque gear reduction, standard equipment on Mustangs from '92 on. It has a seninoid on it. There are two terminals, a B+ and a smaller one. The smaller one is to energize the selinoid. To make this work on your setup, simply run a small jumper wire from the smaller stud to the bigger B+ stud on the starter. Then hook up your old big starter cable coming from your fender mounted selinoid to the B+ on the starter. Vola, will work like a champ.

Let's Recap:

Small terminal on starter to larger B+ terminal on starter.
Thick Red battery cable from fendermounted selinoid to B+ on starter.

Done.

That starter is actually a better design as it draws less amps. It uses permanent magnets and a planetary gearset similar to the ones found in an automatic trans. to acheive gear reduction.

oh yea, and the Automatic/Manual starter question doesn't apply on '79 to '93 stangs. They both use the same starter those years. The only factor involved is what size engine, as the 5.0 uses two mounting bolt and the 2.3 uses 3.

It may have something to do with it since a Manual car don't need the dang thing to begin with...just push the car down a hill and pop the clutch :D Ok bad joke I know :jester:

Anyways I heard these starters for the late model 2.3L mustangs was liter also. I really need to get one for my SVO but since I just spent like 130.00 bux for one on my 93' It maybe awhile. I really wished I had better junk yards around here :(

well I put the one that originally came in my car and (obviously haha) the car started right up! :nice:

thanks for the info on the other starter I have --- and to think I was just about to throw it out

thanks for the info and help :flag:
