I have really gotten into performance vehicles over the past few years but I have never owned a sports car. I am in the market for a new car and am really impressed with the 03-04 cobra. I am concerened about reliability and performance. Are here any know major issues with the cobras and I know this has prbably been asked a million times but any help could be appreciated. And is there any real info on 05 or 06 cobra

Thanks again

no...the 4.6 dohc engine is as reliable as they come....the stock engine is rated up to a 1000 horsepower so reliability should be the least of your concerns with this car.....the t56 is the same tranny used in the viper so it will hold up to a lot. That car is sick as hell man....if I wasn't so in love with my current car I would have bought me one of those mystic convertables....undoubtably the best paint out to date from the factory. Choose the cobra and you will never regret it.

I have a deposit at my local SVT dealer for a new generation Cobra. Latest word is that there will be no new Cobra until 2007 model year, probably released in early summer 2006.

If you have the money to buy I suggest highly you do so. There is no car in that price range that will even come close to the amount of power the 03-04
cobra can make. Lots of the initial problems they had with the 03' have been taken care of for the 04' model. There are some 04's however that do have some carry over problems such as the tick, IRS bolts being the wrong size, causing the pop sound when making sharp turns. The bolts can be replaced
with correct 14mm size, and I believe the tick is caused by piston slap. Most 04's are ok though. The only problem I have had is my decision to pulley or not to pulley. Also traction can be a bitch. :bang:

03 cobra

man i am going in a week to get an 03 with 80 miles on it at a dealership for $26,000. Now that i have read about this tick i almost want to say F**** that and F**** ford. I mean i love mustangs and ford. I have had three mustangs, but comon to hear "most of them are ok" and "piston slap". I also heard they wont always fix it for you. Its not like piston slap is a minor thing. All i know is its going to take some thought now if i want to get it. I know the motor is strong and the car is bad a$$, but im hearing problems and its hurting my decision.

I would not worry about it too much. These problems are minor. The one problem I would worry about is the type of mods you are planning to do. I
believe that CAI and exhaust are ok as far as warranty go, but some dealerships are tuff when it comes to warranty work. As soon as you start messing with pulley's and the blower itself ( porting ) you are asking for trouble. Bye-bye warranty. :(

I would tend to agree with Dr. Wu2000. The 03's had some problems in the early manufacting process, but those have all been addressed. If your car exhibits any of the strange characteristics described in the (now famous) Terminator FAQ, the Ford Dealership will take care of it for free. Got to love a 400 hp car with full warranty!

As for the decision to do mods such as to Pulley or not, in my case its which pulley and Chip/tuner to use. Because with less than 2K in mods these baby's can be very quick and reliable.

Good luck with your decision.
