I am running mobil1 0w-20 (which is the same as 5w-20 conversional oil). Fellow Mustang owners (and a buddy at Ford) tell me to run 5w-30 instead or 5w-20. They told me that 5w-20 is too light of an oil and will not protect in extreme cases. What do you guys think?? What weight oil do you use?? :nice:

Think about this. The modular 4.6 motor first debuted in 1994 and from then through 2000 Ford specified 5W-30 for it. Ford is now claiming that 5W-20 is required because of the tolerances of the motor. They are also going back to previous models and saying ooops you need 5W-20 for those as well. It is all due to upcoming EPA regulations and Ford's CAFE fuel efficiency rating. The thinner oil does reduce friction but, a lot of people also believe it reduces protection affecting the longevity of the motor.

I use Mobil 1 synth 15W50. I read on the back of the Mobil 1 bottles that it is recommended for Muscle car applications, turbo'd and supercharged cars. Seems like you guys run real thin oil. Should I be running this heavy of oil?
No, that's just too heavy, especially for an OHC engine.
For what it's worth, I just switched both our GTs from Mobil 1's 0W-20 to their 5W-30 - as this is what I've heard many people recommend for the 4.6L Ford engine.

I got it from a local speed shop, SpeedSouth. I'd just whip out the phone book and call some of your local shops. Someone is bound to carry it in your area.

You need to check your owner's manual for the recommended weight but I wouldn't be running that heavy of a oil on a car as new as yours; that is unless you have high mileage.

My owner's manual says 10W30  It's a 2000 my brothers 2001 says 5w30 on the oil fill cap. WTF. Ford recommended 3 different oils for the same engine. I use 0w20. I Don't give a hoot in hell about my oil protecting my enine. Thinner oil = more power. I wanna blown my engine. Blown engine = excuse for forged shortblock.

Ummm, ya know, a forged block will still need oil... :D :rlaugh:
