Radar Detectors and License plate cover

I recently got a speeding ticket and would like to prevent this from happening again. I was wondering what everybodies opinions were on different model detectors (or jammers) and what you all think about lisence plate covers, I remember reading somewhere (can't remember where, you can tell me I am crazy if you think so) that it reduces the chances of laser detection because it reduces the reflectivity of your license plate (what cops aim for when using laser detecors). Thanks everybody.

I recommend just speeding less. A detector will help like 10% but is only a tool...

I speed less than I used to and now my heart doesn't jump through the roof when the detector would go off or when I'd see a cop.

I just ordered Beltronic's Pro RX65 yesterday for $250.00 including shipping and insurance from ebay. It is supposed to be the best overall radar detector. Just my 2 cents

That's the one I have and have been real pleased with its performance. Yes they say it is the best dash mounted radar detector available.

I have heard and seen on tests that jammers are a waste of money. I would just get a good radar detector and only do about 10-15mph over and that way you can hit the brakes if you need to and not get a huge surprise.

Never heard of the bumper cover thing so not sure?

if you do get a detector, I'd just get a ~100 one. you shouldn't rely on it too much regardless what model it is, instant on and laser = radar detector is nearly useless.

I am not to worried about the laser detection in the area where I live. My friend has a beltronics (a couple years old) and he has picked up zero laser detectors, this may be due to the age of his unit, but he is very pleased w/ the distance, he claims he has picked them from miles away in states like Illinois were it is flat. I am usually a very attent driver and always looking way ahead, this was my first speeding ticket ever and I have speed everywhere ( just have to be smart). On this occasion I was thinking about something else and I was slowing down, the F&er nailed me as I passed the reduced speed sign, what a dick. And then I was in the middle of getting my KB set up and had the Switch for the switch chip on the seat and he looked at it and acted funny. I am sure he thought I was some street racing punk. I like street racing but I am not a punk.

I am sorry, I meant license plate covers, I changed but I just realized I spelled it wrong, oh well. Thanks, it sound like beltronics is it.

my detector has only saved my 2x in 5 years but at the same time, i had already begin to slow down since i saw traffic in front of me slowing down...

all it does for me is verify that I was clocked.

the last ticket I got, i was paced in VA (detectors are illegal in VA)

The escort passport 8500 x50 and the zr3 lazer shifter are the way to go. Expensive but they work. People that say radar detectors don't work never had one of these.

I had a uniden before this that really was useless, constant false signals.

Once you learn what radar the cops use in your area you're set. Around Albany (and NY) troopers tend to use Ka. (In MA. they seem to use K) I got lasered for the first time last week and the zr3 detected it and jammed it.

I got a ticket a month ago for 63 in a 45. :(
It was my mistake cause the speed limit dropped from 55 to 45 for about a 1 mile stretch and I forgot to drop my cruise.
I usually never speed and I got fu kk ed.
Anyways, $275 in lawyer fees later I just ordered a Bel Express 936 from Buydig.com for $98 shipping included!:nice:
Just a little added insurance for less than a $100 and got tired of being outbid on similar USED units on eBay.

exactly. common sense is free and won't give you a false sense of security like having a radar detector can do

i think i only turn on my detector now because it has a built in compass
Excellent posts JonJon! That's exactly how I see radar detectors - they give a false sense of security. Nothing like a car braking that will tell a cop that he's doing something wrong. Your common sense and eyes are your best defense, plus keeping your foot out of it. I'm not slow, but I don't hammer it all the time either. Knowing when to go, and when to go slow (or along with the rest of traffic) will keep your license clean.
Or you can put aluminum foil in your hubcaps...! :D :p

theres a spray they used on TechTV for the liscense plate that makes it so those pictures ticket things cant get you. Its illegal in every state though. What it is, a paint with glass beads you spray over your plates, when the speeding camera snaps a shot it flashes, the flash is reflected off the beads, and no ticket.

Radar detectors are hit and miss, I use mine for the emergency vehicle warning and the compass, and thats about it.

I have a Valentine1 and have to say its the bomb baby yeeeaaah!

Granted its $400 but c'mon a speeding ticket with that insurance hike and your looking at about $2500 over 3 years.

I wouldnt be too worried about laser radar as they are not to common...because the ticket writer has to be stationary to use it....or at least has to aim it. but there are jammers for that. Also there is a spray called Veil. You spray it on your plate and headlights/taillights. Veil is like $120 per can.

There is also a detector that picks up on the ticket writers radio...called a beartracker (uniden makes it I think). looks just like a radar detector..this would be good when they are sitting in the dark corner without the radar on.

Valentines warning is darn near perfect. Gives you time to ease on the brakes and collect yourself and by the time your slow and saying "where is he" they pop into sight.

Another feature I love about the threat detector is that it learns.
When you drive by a store that sets off K band you simply push in on the knob and the next time you go by you will not hear an audible aleart.

The more you use the radar the better you will get with it. I feel naked without it....sort of like not wearing your seatbelt kinda feeling with it off.

Oh yeah, its also upgradable. When they have a breakthough you send it into them and they upgrade your old detector for a fee...they dont update often.
Mr.Valentine designed the Escort before going solo.
My friend has the Escort 8500 and you cannot compare it to the Valentine1.

I had the Escort 7500 and detection was too short...you wouldnt have time to slow down or react in most cases.

You get what you pay for.

for the record: I dont speed on public streets because thats irresponsible. :nice:

radar detectors and jammers

Check your local laws before getting a jammer. On how well they work I dont know, but I know in Indiana its illegal to jam radar. As far as laser, if your detector picks up laser either you or the car next to or in front of you is being clocked if you arent. So laser detection just tells you basically when your being clocked. On a side note, laser can only be done when the veichle clocking you is stationary- so keep you eyes open and you dont need laser protection. Cops are trained to shoot the liscence plate or headlights for laser. Check local laws but smoke lens cover and plate covers can reduce effectiveness of laser.
As far as radar goes just get a descent detector and try to keep you foot out of it if you can. Mine has saved me multiple times, but cops know when you have one. I was driving down the freeway in the left lane (no traffic) and an unmarked cop rolls up on me, flips on his radar to tell me he know I have a detector and I get over into the right lane and he waves and blows by me just so he didnt have to change lanes.

Just my thoughts.

Sorry for the long post.

The new red light camera by my house DOES NOT flash. I don't know how they work but my friend said there was an article in the local paper about it. I wish I got to read it :(

No flash (even at night) = :owned:
