which size wheel should I choose 16x8/16x7

I HAVE 68 CPE 289 AT STOCK SUSPENSION. WANTED SOME ADVICE ON WHEEL CHOICE. I PUCHASED CENTRLINE WHEELS ONLINE .THE GUY IAM BUYING FROM HAS A TOTAL OF 6 WHEELS, 4 ARE 16X8 WITH 5.5 BCKSPC,2 ARE 16X7 WITH 5.0 BCKSPC.I AM GOING TO USE 1.25 THICK ADAPTERS. I JUST NEED TO DECIDE WEATHER I WANT THE 16X7S OR THE 16X8S ON THE FRONT.WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK.NOT AS MUCH CONCERNED WITH HANDLING(PROBABLY NEGLIGIBLE) AS WITH FITTING AND LOOKS. JUST A WEEKEND TOY. ANY CONSTRUCTIVE INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED

I do believe, allthough Im no expert, that you will want the 16x8 with the spacers I belive 4.75bs is the magic number. I would reccomend looking at Dodgestangs wheel tire combo chart before you do anything though. Your best bet will be going out with a tape measure to verify that everything will clear.

Thanks for reply TORCH RED, yeah,I keep going back and forth on this decision.Seems like there has been a 50/50 split between everyone I talk to.Everytime I think Ive made a decision someone changes my mind. I Keep going over dodges wheel list. what do think 1.25spacer/adapt. will do to the outer clearence.none of wheel specs say anything about spacers. seems almost unanimous 225/50/16 tires are the tires i need to run on the 16x8s

The combos you listed will not work properly.

IF you buy the 16x8 with 5.5 backspacing you will want to run a 1 inch spacer to adjust teh BS to 4.5. This will allow you to fit the widest possible tire with those wheels. 4.75 BS in a 16x8 causes ball joint interference.

If you go with the 16x7 with 5.0 BS again you will want to run a 1 inch spacer and achieve 4.0 BS.

I ordered a set of 17x8 Torq thrust 2's they have a 4.75bs and they fit well. I know clearance is tight to the A arm but they fit. A 16" rim may run into issues with that? Hopefully someone else can shed some more light on the subject.

Looks like someone beat me

But dodge if I use the 1.25 sp/adp on the 16x8 5.5bs wouldnt that = a 4.25 bs ,and the 16x7 with 5.0bs = 3.75bs that should clear on both cases shoudnt it.or will to thick a spacer cause other problems.I am all ears I will do what you recomend as far as spacers. would you run 225/50 or can I get away with something a little taller.

You could run that spacer, but you will be forced to run a slightly skinnier tire than you could fit with 4.5 BS/4.0 BS

50 series is what usually gets put on 16 inch rim. Running a 225/50 is an easy fit with 4.5 bs. I haven't looked at my chart to see if people fit them with less BS. What you will run into is having to roll fenders. I do't have 16s my direct expereince is limited but with 15s in a 15x7 with 3.75 215 60 15 rubs in the front for most people so I would expect a 16x7 with 3.75 BS and a 225 50 to rub aswell.

Thanks to all of you for the help I think that solves my dilema ill get the 16x8s on front and rear.this the first time I have ever acually participated in a thread let alone started one I will be back. It has been a pleasure. xtra credit to dodgestang your charts helped more than anything I found on the web.

I'm the crazy 16x7 front 16x8 combo with different tire sizes on his chart. When we first test mounted/ordered my rims the wheel store said 16x8 wouldn't fit all the way aroundbut I later found out they probably would have with proper backspacing. I know that the 17" guys run 8" wide rims with 4.75" all the way around, an 8" wide rim is an 8" wide rim regardless of the rim or tire diameter, so IMHO a 16x8 w/ 4.5-4.75" backspacing would fit all the way around with minimal clearancing. Obviously to run 16"s you have to clearance the upper control arm lip as the 17" rims clear it and the 16"s intersect, easy 30 second grind, and to maintain optimal tire/fender clearance you're going to want to roller your fender lips. My 225/50/16's fit the front PERFECT though I don't know exactly how much backspacing I ended up with after going to the 7" rim and changing to disc brakes could've effected my setup too. I'm pretty sure it's just a 4" backspaced rim but I believe the SSBC front disc brake kit added some(maybe like 1/8" or so) and gave me a little more room. My rears are 16x8 with 4.5" backspacing, and the 235/55/16 nitto street tires or my 27x10.5x15 mt streets fit just about as tightly as possible, less than 1/4" between the tire edge and inner leaf spring wheelwell lip.
