Auto VS 5spd

So I found this 01 Roush vert, but it's only the stage 1, and it's an automatic. Now my feelings was hurt when I found out that it was an automatic so I'm hesitant to buy it, cuz I love 5 spds. But I was wondering what is the hp difference between and auto and manual and how much time loss are we talking about in the 1/4 mile? Oh yeah, also, what mods would have I to do just to keep up with a stock 5 spd GT? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The stock auto might make 10hp less to the wheels than the 5-speed.....At the most due to the added drive train loss. People really have to get over their Automatic Phobia though. In stock trim, no the 4R70W isn't a real performer. But couple it with a shift kit, trans cooler and stall converter and you're running with, if not showing 5-speeds your taillights all day long and running more consistent times to boot.

I'd buy the car simply on the fact that an Automatic Stage 1 is probably the more rare of the two. :nice:

nope stage 1's are just that stage 1's... i don't think they're ever serialized

I agree with GEARBANGER. I wanted a 5 speed also but came across the auto I have and have no regrets. I did add the TRANSGO shift kit to help the tranny out some. Some people may disagree with the shift kits but I have had no problems at all.

Go for it, I used to thinks autos where so much lesser than manuals until I started going to the track and competing with manual guys. The majority of them all they get a good view of are my taillights. Granted they probably don’t have much practice at the track, but what can I say a win is a win and smoked by “slowmatic” none the less. At the beginning I wished I had gone with a manual, now I’m more than happy with the decision I made.

From an auto owner: get the 5 speed unless you want to really get into drag racing. On the street a manual is more fun.

My last 98GT was auto = boring and everyone is CONSTANTLY like "oh man i thought it was a standard" :(

My new 02 GT is Manual = rediculously fun! and everyone loves the manual

go with the manual :nice:

Nobodies saying that a 5-speed isn't more fun. (although there's a lot to be said for driving a high horsepower car backed by a C4 with a manual valve body :) ) But either way, a 4R70W can be made every bit as fast as any 5-speed and always more consistent. Yeah, I agree I'll miss the sound of my old 5.0L as I shifted through the gears and being able to downshift and hold it to whatever RPM at will, but at the same time on those blah days when you're just too wiped out after work, stuck in the constant stop and go rush hour traffic. I'll thank my lucky starts that I don't have to row through those same gears and wear the bottom of my left shoe out riding a clutch pedal in my Cougar. Not to mention, that a moderately built AOD or 4R70W will take a fair amount more abuse than a T-45 or 3650….at the track and on the street. And when/if an automatic transmission does fail, 9/10 times it will limp you home. But when a stick fails, it’s a good bet that your day is over and you’d better be on the phone to a tow company.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and people will buy, based on personal preference, but neither should be disregarded. I can tell you this….from my personal standpoint, I’ll never buy another vehicle that has or I would plan on adding a power adder to, that wasn’t backed behind an auto. :nice:

That’s just how it is with people out there that don’t really know what they are talking about. For them Auto=Slow. I personally don’t care when someone ask me if I have a standard or auto, I will proudly say it’s an auto. Buddy at work used to talk smack about my car because it was an auto, I just went with it and laughed with him. Gave him a ride to his mechanic to pick up his car one morning. He hasn’t said anything else from that day

can you drive stick shift? if not are u cordinated? if any of these are yes then definetly get a stick shift.
NOTICE i did not say stick was faster or better but automatic is just so dayum boring at least to me, i like the feel of the clutch i like knowing that not everyone can drive it, i like to see people stall and laugh at them, i like 1st 2nd and 3rd gear burn outs, i like redlining my at any given time, i like to decide when shifting is best and what gear i need, i like being able to roll back (in gear) at drive thrus and scare the guy behind you, i like knowing that its ok if i dont turn off my head lights all i have to do is push it 2 ft for it to start, i could go on for ever...
sure an automatic can smoke a stick if the driver sucks or if the other car is not as moddified but cmon an auto will always be looked down on(but not by everyone just every one i know including my grandma) and whats the first thing people say to you when they see ur car "dayum nice car! is it a stick?"

my vote is for stick always will be and will never change
idc if its a low 12 second car ill take a 14 sec GT stick over it any day, plus a shift boot looks way sexy

youre an idiot.

I would pass on the stage 1, not because it's an automatic but because it's a stage 1. It's just a body kit, side exhaust, wheels and springs.

If you are a tall person it can be very difficult to find a comfortable seating position and still be able to comfortably reach the shifter in a manual.

Also, since it is a vert you will need you right hand free to grope all the hotties that will want to ride with you.

Nuff said, get the auto...

I dont regret the auto, a 5sp would have been more fun, but there is also a lot of traffic on my routes, and auto doesnt mean slow, I run with mildly moded 5sp stangs all the time, and killgores right, you have to have that free hand in the vert believe me. as far as my preference, im 51/49 in favor of the auto.
