I pulled this off another board and thought you in Texas would be interested. Now, should I thank my dealer for those holes in the front bumper now...or after it passes?

It would seem no more front plate requirement will very likely become law.

ARTICLE 9. REDUCTION IN NUMBER OF LICENSE PLATES ISSUED

SECTION 9.01. Subchapter A, Chapter 502, Transportation Code, is amended by adding Section 502.010 to read as follows:

Sec. 502.010. ISSUANCE AND DISPLAY OF LICENSE PLATE. (a) Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contrary, including Section 502.180, the department shall issue only one license plate for attachment at the rear of the vehicle for which the plate is issued.

(b) Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contrary, including Section 502.404(a), a person is entitled to operate on a public highway a vehicle that displays only one license plate if the plate is attached at the rear of the vehicle. A person may operate on a public highway a vehicle that displays two license plates if both plates were assigned by the department for the registration period as a set of plates.

(c) In any provision of this code that relates to the issuance or display of 'license plates,' 'plates,' or a 'set of plates,' the term means only one license plate.

SECTION 9.02. The change in law made by this article regarding the issuance of license plates by the Texas Department of Transportation applies only to the issuance of license plates by the department for a registration period beginning on or after the effective date of this article. For a registration period that begins before the effective date of this article, the department shall issue license plates as required by the law in effect immediately before the effective date of this article, and the former law is continued in effect for that purpose.

SECTION 9.03. This article takes effect September 1, 2005

Apparently the Senate bill didn't have it, however the House didn't approve the Senate version so it is in committee. Maybe it will make it back in. Not a big part of the bill, however, I would imagine it could save alot of money.

::Fingers crossed::

Either way, I talked to my dealer yesterday and asked them to leave the front plate off when my car gets prepped (only another week or two). He said it was no problem; Woohoo!

Yeah, but I hear that Texas is also outlawing license-plate frames. They're getting ready to go to photo enforcement ...

That is already done. The law is intended to not obscure the LP (numbers and state), however, I have heard of some writing tickets for ANY kind of frame. A little overboard if you ask me.

I've heard they write tickets if the frame obscures the word "Texas" across the top. Just another probable cause rationale, I think.

Snopes has da dopes!

A friend of mine back home has an A&M plate frame, and she flat-out refuses to remove it. If y'all know anything about Aggies, you'll understand. (I'm an Ag myself, BTW.)

Aggies??? Huh???

Hook 'em Horns!!!

Just kiddin'! :rlaugh:
Lucky Texans! Wish they'd pass that in Cali, although I haven't had a front plate in the 18 years I've been driving. :)
I just got my plates today and I won't be putting one on the front of my beauty until a police officer sites me for not having one. Hasn't happened in the 21 years I've been driving either! :p

To make it simple, the plate must be completely legible with no guessing or assuming what a letter or number is in the plate number or the state. The reason for the law was many frames on the road covered up the state and some states plates look identical. If the frame does not affect this it is legal.
