Changed the oil, oil filter and air filter on the Cobra and headed down to the Kwik trip for some gas. Got about 10 blocks away and OMG I smell burning oil. I didnt spill any. Pull up to the pumps and get out and look back to see the oil stream behind my car going into the street. Look under and theres the puddle and oil sprayed everywhere under the car from the filter back on the drivers side. PANIC
Was gonna have it towed, nobody would come out on a Sunday night. I wasnt going to drive it back home and risk a sieze up. Couldnt leave it on the lot and had to take a chance. Bought 10 qts of 5w20 and away I went stopping and checking it every couple of blocks and adding if I needed it. Talked to a guy at the Kwik Trip in a 5.o that pulled up and told him I just changed the oil and I thought I blew a seal. He looked at the amount of oil and said i dont think so.... you got the filter in too tight and stipped a thread on it, just back it out easy when you change it.

Are you ready for this stupid mistake? I get home and the Wife says ok what did you screw up with an oil change. I said nada and showed her the old filter and said it had a good coat of oil on the seal and all. She says what and I show her the seal on the old filter. Holy **** the seal on the old filter is gone. OMG it was left stuck on there when I put the new filter on and I didnt see it. Do I feel like a dufus or what. Now I have a ****load of oil to clean up in the garage and driveway.

Anybody know If I can take the car wash spray gun and set it to soap and will it spray good enough to get all of the oil out from under the car???

Eh, yeah you gotta be careful about the old gasket sticking to the oil filter housing - hindsight is 20/20 in your case. :D

You could probably remove most of it by spraying it off at a car wash, but I don't think you'll be able to get all of it off unless you take the time to do a thorough job and wipe it off with some old rags. Jack it up (using jackstands as well - safety first!) and spend some quality time underneath the engine bay.

Have fun.

I grabbed a bottle of the Simple green for engines the other day as I was going to be cleaning the dirt out of the engine bay. Engine bay area is ok except for the filter.... underneath is like, WOW

Simple Green works well too. Spray it all down, let soak, rince off.

U.M.

Simple Green is amazing stuff.....I work on ships and we use it for EVERYTHING.. we buy it in 55 galloon drums... after you get it up maybe try to get somthing like that miracle grow inductor thing you see at garden stors that allows you to use your hose and slowly add the simple green through there??? I don't think the simple green could hurt anyhting underneath.

Got the oil filter off last night and the new one on. The seal I forgot about looked like a pretzel. All is good there.
Wpied the underside down with paper towels as best I good and took it to the car wash. Srayed the hell out of it with simple green for engines and let it site for 10 minutes. Sprayed it with the engine and tire cleaner setting and the high pressure wash. Damn underside never looked so good.

All is good now
Thanks folks

bad oil change story.

Back when I lived in an apartment - they really didn't like you doing work on your car in the driveway (had a garage with my appt)...so when I DID do maintenance, I tried to move as fast as possible.

Well, I was changing the oil on my old Cobra.
- Got the car jacked up and on stands
- Pull the baffle off the valve cover
- Got the oil pan out and slide it under the car(you know the one that holds like 5 gal that you can get from Wal-Mart - plug on top, drain spout on the one side so you can recycle it)
- Pull the drain plug out of the main sump of the oil pan....opps drop the plug...it's cool I'll pick it up later.
- Jump up and run in the appt to grab a drink
- Grab new oil filter and case of oil
- Come back to car

What I found was basically that the Exxon Valdese has spilled out from underneath my car.
I started thinking "that pan was NOT full" so I jump under the car and still my finger up against the drain plug hole (motor was still VERY, warm by the way)....
Come to find out...that drain plug that I figured I would get later...landed in the pan and plugged the drain hole...so the pan only held so much before it just drained everything else all over the place. :bang: :bang: :bang:

So, after ruining 3 towels a full roll of paper towels and a gallon of bleach, no one at the apartment complex ever knew a thing....
