i have a small issue and i was wondering if anyone could help me out.

i have an 1989 2.3l AOD n/a. my car starts and idles perfectly fine but earlier today whenever i put my car into gear (any of them other than P and N) the car instantly stalls out.

i, not knowing anything about cars, figured my tranny finally gave out on me so i bought all the parts to do a T-5 swap. but my question is...would a bad AOD really make my car stall out like that? if its not the tranny what could it be?

thanks!

Your 2.3 l NA car should have an A4LD, four speed overdrive automatic. If the tranny worked until just now, I would look at engine probs first. Pull the codes before you do anything.

Some GMs have this problem if the torque converter lockup solenoid sticks in the engage postion, but the a4ld uses the solenoid to inhibit tcc lockup; it is acutated via plain old hydraulics and vacuum controls, in an 89. So at idle, there should not be any easy way to lock it.

I have had stalling with mine for various reasons, like the fan not coming on, and the ac compressor building up enough pressure to stall the motor.

Read the codes via the cel, or a scanner, before you do much else. It will cost less in the long run.

ok...

ok heres what it does.

i can start the car and it will run fine. not a problem. but when i put it into drive, overdrive, 1, 2, or reverse (anything over than park or neutral) it instantly stalls out on me.

i was planning on swapping out the transmission from a AOD to a t-5 anyways this month. i just want to make sure when i get the swap finished my car still wont do the same thing, stall out when i put it in gear.

also ive been having some issues with my AOD anyways, a few days ago my car woudlnt shift out of first gear while i was driving...really really annoying. normally it had problems shifting only when the car was started in the morning, but as of late its been happening more frequently until the said problem happened.

Sounds like you may have the torque converter dying, or the clutch is locked up.

With the engine off, and the car in n, drive, etc, will it roll, or can you push it without turning the engine?

with the car off and the car in D the car does roll back and i can push it. i havent tried any other gears. but i have noticed that one. will switching to a t-5 correct this problem?

thanks for everything!!
