Ford Racing Catback

Anyone have that exhaust? If so how does it sound?

Im thinking about a UPR o/r X pipe and the Ford Racing Catback.

Its pretty much the cheapest catback I have found for the 4.6, and I listened to a few clips on Mustangexhaust.com and it sounded allright, but none were with X pipes. I dont know if its a chambered muffler or not, but from the looks of it it appears that its a turbo muffler, which would sound good with an X pipe IMO.

I dont want something stupid loud, but I want a real good tone. I know the UPR pipe is a real nice peice, and for the price of both I hope I could get a nice setup for not much money.

One more thing... power gains from exhaust are mostly in the mid pipe, correct? I know mandrel bent pipe and freeflow mufflers help, but I imagine its a small difference among catbacks as it is compared to getting rid of all the cats that are on the stock crossover pipe.

I guess my problem is not knowing where to start modding. Suspension is taken care of, handles like its on rails and has been lowered a bit. I also want to get smoked headlights and a mach chin spoiler, but those can wait. So I dont know if I should start with induction, or exhaust. It allready has a FIPK on it, so I think a 70mm tb and upgraded plenum would be a nice boost... then again I think there are gains to be had in ridding the stock h pipe and getting a catless mid pipe and catback. I like the way the car sounds, but something different wouldnt be bad. Maybe I should just start with induction... or U/D pullies... damn, I hate this... hahaha.

The tone is pretty similar to stock, but louder. I suggest you get the X-pipe first and see how you like it with your stock catback. And after that, if you want to get a little louder then get the Ford Racing catback. It sounds pretty good. Way better than Magnaflow.

So far, I've had the stock exhaust, Ford Racing catback, Magnaflow catback, and currently Bassani catback. Oh, and i've had the Magnaflow catted x pipe too, but currently running bassani x-pipe.

I got rid of the Ford racing one because it wasn't loud enough for me.

If it has a better tone than the Magnaflows, then its probaly a good choice for me.

As far as doing an X pipe first, I would but someone allready changed the catback. They cut the mufflers out, and re piped it. So now I have a stock h and no mufflers.

It actually sounds really nice, its rhaspy when you jump on it, only downside is 5500 RPMs sounds like 3500 RPM's, theres no change in tone... but I think there is some performance to be gained from ridding the h-pipe for something high flow, and getting a good catback for a nice balance.

check my sig for sound clip with an x pipe but with cats- not the greatest quality, but should give you an idea. I've had it a few years now and I am going to weld in some spintechs or Bassani mufflers some time in the future for the same reason stated above. It's a little on the quiet side and the mufflers appear to be 2.25", not 2.5" as the rest of the mandrel bent catback. But with an O/R, should be considerably louder.

That sounds pretty mean. I think an o/r X would be really loud with that setup.

About the pipe diameter... Summit Racing says its 2.5" with 3" tips. Maybe they changed it, I dunno... just thought id throw that out.

Agreed that an O/R X would sound a decent bit louder and actually do like the sound that the FRPP makes.

I can verify that the tubing is 2.5" and tips are 3.0", which is up from 2.25" and 2.5" stock on my '98 respectively, but the muffler inlet/outlet tubes are welded inside the tubing and therefore have to be less than the 2.5" diameter tubing. That's why I was guessing that the muffler was 2.25" (same as stock).

I was also looking into that catback for my 97 cobra. I love the price, and the fact that it is stainless. I dont want a stupid loud exhaust note either, but I want a smooth deep tone. I was curious about how the tips look though, because I like my stock tips but they are a little dull looking. And since the 94-98's have exposed tailpipes, imo 3 1/2 inch tips are a bit too big. 2 1/2 to 3 inch tips look perfect. I also like it better when the tips extend behind the tires like the stock, flowmaster, & dynomax kits do.

So while the 3" tips are perfect size IMO for 96-98, the stock 2.5" that extended all the way back behind the tire were damn nice also. The ones in this kit do not extend like the stockers, which I found disappointing, but really only are noticed if your look at the stang from the side far away from the stang. If your around the car looking basically down at the tips, it looks just right.

Here they are on my stang....

LI98GTStang: Your car looks amazing. I love that color, and the exhaust sets it off.

I guess the only thing is... I saw what you are talking about with the pipes being 2.5" in diameter, but where they feed into the muffler it sizes down a little bit, untill it re-exits the muffler and goes back to 2.5".

Do you think thats gonna hurt performance at all? If it doesnt, then ill probaly be going with the UPR o/r X and the Ford Racing catback..:D

Thanks for the props. Correct, it does size down when entering/exiting the muffler, but I don't think there is much hp lost there since a free flowing catback is worth 5hp max anyway. What the FRPP has over stock is 2.5" mandrel compared to 2.25" non-mandrel bent tubing overall added to it that the stocker really pinches in around certain areas i.e. behind the tire. The FRPP, or any other catback for that matter, doesn't.

Cool, sounds good then... Now I need to debate weather to get tb/plenum now or exhaust. I think im going with the tb and plenum since I like the way the car sounds now. Ill try and save up and get the X pipe and catback together after I do the intake side of the engine.

You might consider an MRT H-pipe vs. an X-pipe. X-pipes change the tone, making it more exotic sounding. You either like it or don't. I had an X-pipe on my '03 Cobra and never got used ot the sound. I heard a similar setup with an MRT H-pipe and I was hooked. What a difference. IMO the X-pipes change the sound too much, whereas the MRT H-pipe maintains what I call the classic Mustang Muscle sound. Just accentuates it. LOL! JMO.

Yup I know all about that. In my mind, if I had a 5.0 I would go with an H pipe and a chambered muffler, but personally I like the way a 4.6 sounds with an X pipe and a straight through/turbo muffler. I like the exotic sound, lol.

Don't listen to an SLP Loudmouth I and Catted X clip :p You might not go back

Been there, haha. If I came across a used kit I would try and ****** (why the hell did it edit snat ch?) it up.

I think I like the LM-II and an o/r X better though. The LM-I and an o/r x is crazy!!!

I have the FRPP Cat-back with a MRT-H (catted) and i love the sound..Has zero drone and has a nice mellow rumble at idle and screams when opened up...There not as loud as other brands but they sound different and get compliments on it.

I have the same set-up, and luv it. You can hear mine on mustangexhaust.com!
