Questions Concerning a 347, Suspension, and Drag Racing

Hi, this is my first post on these forums, and to start things off I have already searched them for these answers and have been able to find some, but not all of them so I thought I would ask.

First I was wondering If I could get some opinions on my setup, I'm running a 347 with the following:

Forged Eagle Crank, Rods and Pistons
AFR 185cc Heads
Hooker Comp Headers, 1 5/8in. Full Length
Comp Cam XE274HR 224/232 at .050 with .555/.565 (274/282 Advertised)
Comp Cam Aluminum Roller Rockers 1.6
MSD Distributor (Magnetic Pickup, Steel Gear)
MSD 6AL
Performer RPM Intake
Holley 650 DP

Behind this I've got the Ford King Cobra Clutch, T-5 with B&M Pro Ripper, Stock Driveshaft and a Currie 9 with 31 Spline, 3.70 Gear.

How much power do you think this setup will be making?

On to the the other part of the title. I plan on racing with this setup on quite a few occassions, and will be installing it in a 66 Mustang. I'm already installing subframe connectors, tower braces and monte carlo bar, would you recomend anything else for stiffening the chassis?

Also, I plan on getting the Mustang Depot Ultra Suspension kit but will remove front swaybar for racing purposes. It seems like a good suspension for a mild setup but I can't find if it includes bushings, and if so what type of bushings, because I am interested in upgrading to Polyurethane.

I was also curious as to what motor mounts to run. Will stock 302 work, or should I go for something else? I have been able to find little in the way of performance parts on these and would greatly appreciate any insight on what I should do concerning them.

I'm not building a race car, just something I could have a little fun with at the track. Thanks for any help.

Your setup sounds good, I would guess you to be around 400 hp with that combo, maybe a little more.. Stock 302 mounts will work, A roll cage would stiffen it more, depends on what you want though, you can find street friendly cages. Dont know about the bushing's though, Someone else might be able to answer that..

Your 347 setup is much the same as the one in my '66 Coupe but I am running the XE274H flat tappet cam. I have a C4 with 3.55 gears as well.

You probably have over 400 horses at the flywheel and upper 300's at the tire. It will definitely be a fun street/strip car!

I have the shock tower brace and subframe connectors as well. The subframe connectors are the best mod you can do for stiffening short of adding a rollbar. I will worry about the rollbar whenever I start seeing 11's at the strip.

As for motor mounts, the stock rubber mounts work fine but with the extra torque of the 347 I suggest a torque strap. I have heard of many people breaking the driver side mount. I just put one on my car last night. I bought an 8" aluminum turnbuckle (could have used a 6") from the hardware store and bolted a piece of steel angle to the sway bar mount and bolted one end to the angle and the other end to the front of the cylinder head.

This is exactly what I did:

Sorry, to be more specfic, Drag Racing.

As to the Torque strap, this is the first time I've heard about it. I will definetly look into it as it looks like a fairly easy and especially budgeted upgarde. Thanks

I'd say about 416 flywheel and about 330 RWHP based on 20% loss. What I did for the mounts is take a standard pair and drill a 3/8 hole through them and bolt(not tight about 1/4 inch left) them together allowing for no seperation. If you don't have them I'd weld in torque boxes, the continued stress will/can cause cracking on the roof/quarter joint.
