Isnt it better to install an actual shift kit in the tranny as opposed to just doing the recalibrations with a programer??? i put shift kits in my 95 and 98 gt's and it chirpped 2nd at will, then i put one of those B&M electronic shift improvers and it just seemed like it tighend the ship points but it did not feel the same, what do you guys have on your trannies???

J-mod, SCT tune, F150 trans cooler. VERY firm, almost too firm if that's possible, LOL!
Yes, it is possible. I've seen a thread about someone who wanted to back off or undo the jmod because it was too firm. That's one of the reasons I chose to go with the tuner. It can be undone. It can be adjusted. It can be tweaked. All in under a minute.

I have the Jmod on the firmest setting, and even before the TC went in there was no way it was too "firm."

For you... but for others, I don't know. If you have a track-only car, that's one thing. If you have a daily driven car, then there is such a thing as too firm. Besides, everyone's idea of "firm shifts" can be different. That's why I like the tuner.

LOL, too firm! Never enough! I had the transgo shift kit set with the Street/strip setting with a 3200 stall and it just wasn't firm enough! I just got a new tranny and am putting bigger accumulators, full race shift kit on it! You can still adjust the settings electronically even with the shift kits and worked valve bodys....but I wouldn't know why you want a soft shift in a mustang! Let'er rip!

First and foremost, the first thing to do is add a cooler to that transmission.

Secondly, do the J-Mod shift kit and only the J-Mod kit. There is different settings you can do. If a hard shift is not for you go with a lesser setting from the get go.

Finally add a tune, I should be more specific, a SCT tune. If the car shifts to hard after the tune, you can back it off from there.

The way I described it is the best way to go about it. This is the way that J, who designed the 4R70W auto and J-Mod kit would recommend it and he recommended this long before SCT came into existance. I have a few friends who were Ford Transmission techs and this is how they would recommend you go about it. This is the way I went about it and couldn't be any happier.

The J-mod and SCT are the same person. His name is Jerry Wroboski (Sp) and he is the founder of SCT. The man knows his stuff.

For others, the J-Mod is by far the best way to go since you are simply allowing more fluid circulating through the stock components. It's a very simple mod and the best part is it works also with part throttle shifts which unlike many programmers need 75%+ throttle to allow for harder shifts. The J-Mod has helped my car eliminate the sloppy 2nd to 3rd shift and 3rd to 4th shift which many of these cars have. Adding the programmer allowed me to tailor the shifts for different rpms.

My friend and I are doing the jmod on his car right now, so far it has not been tricky at all, but we cant finish it until his tranny cooler comes in. We have the valvebody out of the car, but we havent taken it apart yet, so hopefully it wont be too tricky to get it back together and back in the trans.
