Hey guys, im trying to line up my headers to make sure they fit my gt40p heads. I was just wondering how do i tell whitch side if the front and whitch is the back? Both sides are exactly the same, but I did realise the spark plugs go out at an angle, so should the spark plugs be facing the front of the car, or pointing to the back? thanks.

Thanks.

I'll be honest that picture looks like its the plugs are facing back... the firewall is to the top left and from that view it appears they are slightly slanted towards to the top left of the picture... but maybe its my mind playing games. I can't believe they would flip the plugs direction between stock e7's and the gt40's. I'm not positive though so don't hold it against me.

It really doesn't matter. Each head is the same as the other. If the plugs are facing foreword on one side, they'll be facing back on the other. Now, gt40p's have a less aggressive angle than e7's and gt40's. The angle is almost perpendicular to the head.

Does this answer your question…or is there something else your trying to accomplish which is not being understood?

They ARE side specific. Look at the cooling jackets, they are different. The back of the head has an additional port that the front does not have. If you put em on backwards you will have all sorts of cooling issues. Ask me how I know.....

edit... apon re-read I used cobra GT40 heads, not P heads. Maybe it doesnt matter on the P heads but on regular GT40s it DOES matter.

Nope....both heads are identical. They both have cooling ports on both sides. The head gaskets are what blocks the cooling ports off on the front of the engine. They both have accessory holes on both sides as well. Now, P heads do not have the thermactor holes on the backs of the heads while the gt40's and e7's do. The fronts of those have the thermactor holes also….they are just blocked off with a plug. If you get the e7 or gt40's reversed you will have to take the thermactor plugs out of the back of the head and stick em in what now would be the front.

Guys think about it....they're not going to design and manufacture two different casts for the same head. This saves cost, also if one head gets damaged they won't need a specific side to fix it.

you can only put the e7s on one way, the big hole is the back where the thermactor tube goes. the front side has a smaller hole for the stud that holds the PS pump, unless that metal thing is the plug then i duno.

theres the real answer! They ARE side specific. Not sure bout the GT40p's as they probly didnt have an Air Pump tube?

Exactly.

I bought some explorer gt-40's (non-P) and thought the same thing, i was convinced i had been ripped off, Then my dad told me i can put them on either side, i just stayed with the factory plug angles.

ding ding ding

We have a winner.

I believe that the P heads just have a threaded hole for the accessory bolt cause if I remember right I had the bitch of a time getting that threaded adapter off the accessory bolt since I didn't need it with my p heads.

thanks guys, I realise now that both heads are the same, and the will be point opposite directions, When I asked the question I was test fitting the headers on the heads with the spark plugs and couldnt figure out whitch header went on the head. The other head was on the floor covered by a towel, so I didnt notice but thanks guys. Maybe when someone dumb as me searches they will find this thread haha.
