brake fluid ate the paint off!!!!

so i have had my 06 gt since april and i kind of noticed and issue with the master cylinder resivour a while ago. every few days brake fluid would build up on the outside of the housing and sit in the lip of the seam... looked like a bad seam. so i would wipe it off every few days until i could take it in, no problem. i went on a longer than normal trip (couple hundred miles) and went to wipe it off the next day and bam... brake fluid on the frame rail, paint bubbled. so i said ohh man, and wiped my paint off, the car immidiatly went to the dealer. plus i could see a trail where the fluid was now leaking out of the cap and down to the seam. so i took it to the dealership and droped it off for a week while i went to get my tonsils out. so they called later that week and said "we looked at your concern and it was the slave cylender supply line" and the warrantee representitive had to ok the repainting of the engine bay. well they repainted it alright, yea with a touch up brush not to mention the sloppy technician that got yellow paint on the master cylinder. i was fine that happened until i washed my car a day ago poped the hood to clean the engine bay, and saw that more paint had come off and that it is still leaking fliud.. from the cap. i am not an idiot, i an a ASE certified tech and now i have my voice back so they can hear my side of it. plus im gonna push for those jerks to RESPRAY the engine bay. sorry for not having any pics...

i was just wondering if anyone has had this problem or knows someone else who has?

good luck, paint warranty like that is hard to get approved. it is also hard to respray it properly or to your satisfaction with the mechanical parts installed. warranty will most likely NOT pay to have the mechanical parts removed for the respray.

i have not yet heard of anyone having the paint issue with the master cylinder issue, but it was only a matter of time. brake fluid is known to eat paint.
 
I think there may be a fairly widespread problem with those plastic brake fluid reservoirs. Mine leaked too. First attempt by the dealer was to replace the cap, but that didn't work. I think the lip of the fill hole was not molded right from the supplier. They did have to replace the whole reservoir on mine.

Keep after your dealer. This appears to be a generic problem. I've seen a number of posts on brake fluid leaks. I thought I was the only one to have this problem.

Sorry to hear about the paint problem. Yes indeed, brake fluid is death on paint.
 
I would recommend that you keep an eye on it. That is how mine started out. Just a little weep. But, my experience has been that a brake fluid reservoir should not leak or weep or anything. It should seal completely.
 
Should be covered. I had a brake man work on my 1966 Convertible. He spilled brake fluid on my fender. Ate the paint away. He paid for the brake job and insurance covered the paint.
It is a serious issue. And the person at fault should pay.
 
I just dropped my car off at Kearny Mesa Ford in San Diego, where I bought it. They said they would replace the Master Cylinder and sand and spray the area effected in the bay in their body shop. No questions asked.
 
just took my car into the dealership this afternoon. i made sure to wear my shop uniform (from my current job) into the dealer. right away the service advisor addressed me and said let me get you the service manager (they all remember my car). after telling him that i was unhappy with the service he agreed to cover all repairs under warranty and send it to the body shop to get painted (again).

they are replacing the master cylinder, resivour, and cap. hope that does it.

oh and i got offered a job as a technician, i told him that i will bring in a resume when i pick the car up. i guess i'll see how that work out, he sounded happy, cant be that bad
 
Hmm, brake resivour eh? Hmm, I have the seep as well but keep forgetting to bring it up. I'm in there Thursday for an oil change, I'll bring it up then, maybe get it booked in for when I return from my road trip. Until then, keep wiping!
 
A friend warned me about the brake resevoir. It ate his paint off also. I checked the resevoir on my 07 the second day I had it and it was leaking too. I removed about 4 oz of brake fluid to put the level slightly below the max line and have had no more issues with it. I think they overfill them from the factory. Mine was 1/4 inch above the max line.
 
Hey Mustangdaren, don't count on dropping the level to stop the leak. I did exactly the same thing for exactly the same reason. It was a bit over the "Full" line so I siphoned out a little. No help. If you have seen even a little leak, you have the problem. Get your dealer to look at it. He is going to first say that the cap needs to be replaced, and then when it continues leaking, you will find that you have to have him replace the reservoir.
 
So far, guess I have been lucky. 800 miles on the car since lowering the level and no leaks, check it everyday. I took it down to about 5/16 inch below the max line. My friend is a Ford tech and when I told him about it he said he has never heard of this problem before. That kinda supprised me as common as it is on all the Mustang boards.
 
It is weird. My dealer was also puzzled. But, I think it is a common problem. It may be that most folks just don't look under the hood very often. So they may not be reporting it. Also, brake fluid is pretty colorless, so you have to look at it from an angle to see that there is a little stripe of wetness on top of the reservoir.
