What I learned today: Stock '06 GT's are slow, Cobolts are faster stock (Funny Post)

I showed this post at work to a guy who has a base Cobolt. He said it "is not uncommon for stock Cobolt SS's to smoke the '05 Mustang's." Worse part, he was serious. I don't even argue with people like that, no need. Most people surrounding us during that conversation realized the guy was probably a throwback to some kind of primate. If he was driving a SS, I probably would have bet him some cash.

I always love these type of posts.

Kind of like how lightly modded Probes can "kill" 99-04 Mustang GTs hehe

*Sigh* .... Why could FoMoCo not have any foresight. You're telling me when it was time to name the 'Probe', nobody at the board could've thought of anything better? I'll never understand why they named it that....:nonono:

I think when something gets badged SS or SRT (namely SRT-4s) or whatever people think it will destroy anything on planet earth.

It comes down to physics. There is a HIGH correlation between power-to-weight ratio and performance in acceleration. Is it always right? No, but if I was a betting man I would always bet on a car with the better power to weight ratio, and I would be right more often than I'd be wrong. That said...

These glorious Cobalt SS/SC are only 2991lbs....great they are really light, but they only make 205 bhp. Which is 14.6 lbs per hp, and that really isn't that good.

The Mustang GT is 300bhp with 3525lbs which is about 11.75 lbs per hp. Which is way better than 14.6.

Lets say the Cobalt is modded to about 250 bhp, that is 11.96 lbs per hp which is finally on par with a STOCK Mustang GT.

Again power-to-weight isn't the only factor in determining which car is faster, but it is a good one. And if you go on that, chances are pretty good you will be right.

I just had to go through that mental exercise to regain the intelligence I lost after reading that thread.

I think part of the problem is the owners of both cars. The owners of the 4 bangers think they're car is great because they beat a Mustang GT. The owner of the Mustang either didn't know they were being raced, or didn't go all out. I know I don't throw the pedal to the floor when some stock bozo pulls up and tries to race. If a stock '05 GT can beat a lightly modded Sn95, there's no way a cobalt will beat an 05 GT.

I could care less which car is faster, that wasn't the reason I bought this car. I'll bet if I asked 100 people which car they would rather have, 5 of them MIGHT say a cobalt and those 5 people would be under the age of 20.

Mustangs just simply look better than those things....:D

Interesting read from the domestic rice boys. I think the J-bod guys are missing the point of the Mustang. Sure, allot of people get them for the speed, but the new stang offers allot more in terms of comfort and quality (over previous versions). My new GT is slow to me... just the way I want it. I got a built fox body in the garage, so I could care less about racing the new stang. A few years down the line though, the new stang will be off warranty, and the party will begin.

Some fugly fool in a Saturn Ion Red Line tried to take a crack at me on the highway, from about 65 mph. He was such a little moron too, I was trying to move over into the right lane because my exit was coming up soon, and when i'd slow down, he'd slow down, then when i'd speed up, he'd speed up. Man, I was pissed. Especially cuz I wasn't in the mood to race. Anyhoo, finally, I dropped it down to 3rd and wasted him.

My point: They aren't so far off the cobalts, they have 205 hp as well, I'm pretty sure.

Damn, I wish I would have read that before I bought my Stang. Now I wish I would have bought that SS/SC at the local Chevy dealer. Ha! Just kidding. No matter what kinda times kids are gettting out of their little boosted FWDers, I'll never own a performance car that smokes the wrong tires in the water box.

Just came across an article from Motor Trend road test of the '05 Mustang GT vert vs '05 350Z vert. They both have near identical gear ratios...3.55(GT)&3.54(Z), the GT is 173 lbs heavier...power to weight ratio is identical...12.3 lb/hp(the Z gives up 13 hp and 46 ft/lbs to the GT). Now here is where the GT slowly starts kicking the Z's tail...The GT even launches harder than the lighter Z...

GT / Z
0-30 2.0 / 2.1
0-60 5.4 / 5.8
0-100 13.3 / 15.3
1/4 mile [email protected] / [email protected]

Then this from Car & Driver...
The 2911 lb SS Supercharged ripped from 0-60 in just 5.9 and through the 1/4 mile in just 14.4@100...

Bottom line...can a Cobalt beat a Z, much less a vert Z????

I thought you guys would find this amusing and it would make some of our days go by a littler better:

Now this all has to be true because I saw it on the internet!!

(Warning, you will lose 10 IQ points by reading their posts)
Thanks for that! My eyes are bleeding, now!

I faced down a Z twice, dropped off at 60 (didn't want to kill anyone, just make a point). First time, he's eyeing me, but I don't know if he's going to go on green - he does, pulls a little ahead, then I hammered him. Second time, I know he's going for it and kill him off the line and don't look back - c ya!:owned:

BTW - I don't condone street racing - I just hastily got up to my usual 5-10 mph over the speed-limit.:nice:
