160 Thermostat

Your stock thermostat is already set at 180 degrees, although I don't have the exact reason I was advised by FRPP and SCT that it is not recommended to go with a 160 stat otherwise the PCM may go into fail safe mode, sorry that I couldn't be more helpful..

From my understanding, the spanish oak computer in the S-197 will not allow anything lower than a 180 stat otherwise the PCM will go into fail safe mode and besides, the factory stat is a 180 and you really don't need to go any lower than that anyhow..

I have heard of people running 160's fine but the sct tune needs to adjust the fan settings. Try to hit someone up in the sct forums and double check. Anything to help cool this beast down would be great.

All I can tell you lostsoul is I did ask James from SCT about running a 160 Stat and he advised against it, however he also mentioned that if your concerned about the temp running too hot, you can go into the fan settings parameter in the tuner and adjust the fan temp settings to come on more often..

The whipple/ford racing supercharger I just installed on my car comes with a 160.

Nola I dont know who you are, but thanks for the info. If whipple gave you a 160 for the new SC then I think its safe to say its for a reason. The question is what setting in the sct need to be changed to go along with this? Find out and get back to us :D

That's exactly what needs to be answered, what settings in the SCT tune need adjusted ? for ie do you need to add more timing, less timing ? or add, take away spark ?? if this is for a SC application ? it may even be possible the computer itself may need to be sent to whoever the SC manufacturer may happen to be ?? I do know that both Roush and Steeda require the PCM be sent down to them, in order to re-calibrate the entire PCM...

Its NOLAGT...I just got my name on here before I decided on a GT:D MF is down so I rome around some lol

I have not used the sct for the tune. I sent my ecu to whipple and they flashed in the ford racing tune. There handhelds are not ready yet still but all it does is upload the tune.

I finished the blower install today and it hauls much bahooty so a 160 Tstat is ok if you ask ford racing/whipple. And I think ford would know how to set up a ford.....

Did I mention it hauls!

I plan to try to get the ford tune on a sct for further tweeking and adjustments. If that can happen I dont see why a sct tuner couldnt figure out how they have it set up.

Thanks got the links V. but they just lead to the same known answer. If this was for a stock setup I wouldn't do it or worry about it. Since NOLAGT(post hoeing in the wrong forum:D ) has a whipple and I have a procharger we will be building up much more heat. I believe the new stangs have much more heat soak then other years and anything to help it even if 10 deg less would be a help.

Nolagt.. this is what the team needs you to do :

1) install intake and coolent temp guage
2) leave out the 160 threm and stick with 180
3) on average day record outside temp and hum and romp around for 30 min at different rpms and speed and record all temp info
4) install the 160 and get the tune changed
5) run same corse on day with same temp and record
6) report to HQ with findings :nice:

A lower temp thermostat is not conducive to long engine life. Engine heat is necessary for a number of reasons. Some of them most detrimental to engine life are:

Lack of heat to boil the condensation out of the oil so that it can be sucked through the PCV valve and burned. There are additives in engine oil that can deal with a small amount of moisture in the oil, but they saturate quickly if the moisture is not removed by heat.

Thaaats not going to happen lol. I spent 18hrs installing this thing...no way am I going to start changing things already. Besides I would have to get the ecu reflashed somehow and whipples tune is for the 160.

I dont see how going from a 180 to a 160 can hurt things....its not that much cooler. Besides....thats how the kit comes from whipple....so thats what I am going to run. Ill let yall know in a 100k how its holding up....if the 10psi dont do me in first.

Maybe its because the blower can heat things up MUCH faster than a n/a setup so it needs a lower temp to give it a head start on cooling. Like now I have to drop my RPM point I have set in my raptor shift light because it revs up much faster so I need an extra second to be able to shift at the same point....

Nola, a 160 would be open all the time and run hotter.

Now a blower car with a tune that controls the fans is how Ford does it. Ford uses a 160 to cover its butt. Detnation on a blower car is a no-no.

Last time I checked, E fans cost HP if left on all the time..................

IMOP a 160 is WAY to cold no matter what Ford says......

Well...I dont know :D I do know that is how the kit comes and thats what is on the car. I am not going to miss any power that is lost with the fans running a lot...trust me lol.

KB blowers come with a 160 as well...so they seem to think the same as ford.
