How do I tell the difference in 3.55 gears, 3.73 gears and 3.27 gears?

Jack the rear of the car up, stands under the axle tubes. Get a fishing weight and some string. Tie the string onto your Driveshaft, close to the Diff. and tie it tight. Put the weight on the end of the string to make sure its pointing straight down (just a plumb line *if you do carpentry or masonry) and have someone turn the tire forward ONE complete revolution. Look at the drive shaft, and count how many times it went around:

How many times the string went around is the rear gear you have.
little less than 3= 2.73
Little over 3 = 3.27
About 3.5 = 3.55
Little less than 4 (3.73) =3.73

Well then. If he can't decipher what "3.73" stamped into a ring gear means, there's not much I can do.

Actually, in that case, I'm fairly impressed he was able to ask about it online.

not all gears are stamped. i have three sets with no stampings other than part numbers.
