hey all, i may be moving to chicagoland next year and being from Florida we don't have any emissions testing down here so my question is with all the serious muscle up there how does one get there inspection sticker? Will i be ok with just putting on an x-pipe w/cats and smog pump or what?? i drive it less than 1000 miles a year..also can you recommend a good stang shop...thanks for your help!!

slvrsn95,

I live a half hour away from chicago and i run

SLP Longtubes
SLP "catted" X-pipe
and LM2

I passed emmisions and have yet to get pulled over or a ticket for the sound.

Where exactly are you moving too?

thanks for the reply shallowreef...we're not sure yet my mother-in-law lives down sw suburb new lenox near joliet but i'm going to be working at o'hare so probably somewhere between i really don't want to have a long commute you know...i guess as long as i am near a Portillos's everythings good haha...

I think if you stay outside of cook county where Ohare is you dont have emisions testing. You can also get a SV (special vehicle) plate which is like a antique plate you can drive to the track and to shows and such.

2006 is the last year the non-OBDII cars have to be tested.... I think its after March or something that pushrods are exempt. so just dont register your car right away, keep the florida plates on just to be sure. and maybe someone else can chime in on the exact date...

I feel your pain...

I'm going through the same issues. I recently relocated from the NE burbs of Detroit (no smog testing, no front plate) to the NW burbs of Chicago. My LX doesn’t have any smog equipment and it runs leaded gas. Also, I can't see myself drilling holes in the front bumper covers anytime soon.:nonono:

For what it's worth, we don't have inspections here in IL, but we do have emissions in certain areas. I'm actually in New Lenox where your mother-in-law lives and it's quite a haul to O'Hare from here. I've never had a front plate on my car and never will. I've had it for almost 8 years now, and the only reason I ever got a ticket for no front plate was because I got pulled over for speeding, but I stopped before the cop ever pulled out from where he was sitting on radar. I knew I was busted, so I waited for him, and he said he had to write me for something, since he said I was doing like 58 in a 35. It was a $25 ticket, and not a moving violation.

For a $25.00 fine i will deffinately go without one and try my luck and if i do get stopped i'll just be like"oh sorry officer, i just moved here from Fl and didn't know, well that explains why the DMV gave me two tags" lol

Thanks for that info you all, the two things that bothered me most about moving up there besides the winter's(ie: emissions testing and front plates) doesn't seem like it's going to be a problem. Also need suggestions for shops/tuners in the chicagoland area for when i'm ready to step it up again with the ys-trim and DFI..

theres a number of shops you can go to, youre best bet would probably be speed inc. there in schaumburg, near ohare. also when its time to get it tuned go to bob kurgan, hands down the best tuner when it comes to mustangs in the chicago area. he uses a couple of different places to tune out of and one of them is speed inc.

also like s&b said, check out www.chicagolandmustang.com well be able to answer just about anything you want/need to know. kurgan is also a sponser so you can get. good luck with the move and hopefully youll join the club, by far the best group of people ive ever met in my life.
