Hi everyone, new guy here. Im currently looking to pick up a 99-04 Mustang, and I came across a really mint, extremely low mile 99 Cobra for sale close to me. Now I think I remember hearing something about 99 being the year that there was some problem and the power rating was affected, but I dont know too much about it. I just wanted to ask , is this year something I should stay away from? Im looking to use the car for my daily driver, and it would only get very light mods, just headers and an exhaust, nothing major. Also, anything else to look out for, or reliability problems with these? Thanks alot.

Contact SVT at 1-800-ford-svt and run the VIN# by them to see if the car has had the fix (the vast majority of 99s have already had "the fix" performed by Ford).

In a nutshell, the "horespower fix" for a '99 consisted of a new intake manifold, new catback, and a PCM/ECU computer update.

Try running a search for "1999 cobra," "recall," or other relavent keywords on the message board. There have been multiple threads in the past relating to the horsepower problems that 99s are associated with. A '99 that has received the "fix" should be just fine.

You may also try using Google and entering in search keywords such as "99 Cobra fix" or "99 cobra horsepower recall," etc, etc. G'luck!

Thanks. I went and drove the car today, and I really liked it. Only problem is that I can only get financed back to 2000... and this is a 99 :( I wouldve drove it home if it was one year newer. I cant find any 00-02 cobras for sale right now, and I know Im not going to be happy with a GT now that I drove the cobra. This sucks..

It's gonna be tough finding a '00 or '02.

I've had both a 97 and a 99 and either one is a winner. As was mentioned in an earlier post, you can give Ford the VIN and you'll probably find that the horsepower recall has been done. My 99 has 64K on it and looks great, runs better. It's not a daily driver but it could be. No major problems at all. But personally if I had to pick - I'd look for a 96 - 98 instead. They'll be cheaper, and the HP is about the same as the 99. Replacement/upgrade parts are easier to find. The 99 and 01 Cobras have the IRS and you can't do burnouts half as good as the 96-98's with the solid rear axle. But like I said you can't go wrong with either one.
