Hurst short throw

A note of caution. After having one of the shaft mounting screws back out and scare the beejeezus out of me on the freeway, I put some retaining nuts on the ends and Loctited the whole thing together. It's weld-solid now and I suggest this as a precaution to all.

The shifter is integral to driving the car, so why would you go cheap on a shifter? It's like buying a cheap mattress, it makes no sense you spend 1/3 of your life on your mattress!

The hurst, while a slight improvement over the stock is not nearly has good as the 5.0, Steeda or MGW. You are better off just using the Saleen short throw kit rather than the Hurst.

You'd be a fool to go cheap on your shifter.

In fact, this is what Car and Driver said last month about the Hurst:

The Shelby also drew gripes for the Hurst shifter, which is so high-effort that it’s difficult to make two-to-three and four-to-five upshifts.

still using magazines for your real world experiences, eh? find me a hurst owner that has the same problem. my wife never has a problem, so why would anyone else?

still using wife's opinion instead of real world experiences?

I drove with the hurst, it's no better than stock, plain and simple. The stock shifter was the best stock shifter ford has ever offered in any car EVER, thus the saleen kit is the way to go if you want to do it on the cheap. Hurst owners don't want to own up because they were too cheap to buy a real shifter so they hype it up like it's better. Just look at the Tri Axe side by side with the Hurst.

Holy Crap! Has anyone else had this happen them? That does not seem safe to me. Was this a case of not tightening up the hex by the installer? What do you Hurst owners (who installed the unit yourselves) think??? I am on the fence between the MGW and the Hurst. I think the MGW will shift better, but it is pricy. The Hurst looks awesome and many like how it shifts. This could be the deciding factor for me if this does not get cleared up (mind you I still don't have my car yet:nonono: ).

OK, I wasn't going to post because I had a Pro50 for sale and I figured that everyone would think that I was just trying to sell my shifter.... BUT, now the Pro50 is sold so let me tell you my experience.

I had the factory shifter and added the Saleen piece...... it was great and I bought mine when they were still like $30 so it was a killer deal. But after awhile everyone kept talking "Hurst" and the name was cool so I tried one..... it was the exact same as the stock w/ Saleen piece however the Hurst was MUCH, MUCH more noisy. And no, it wasn't an install problem that's just how the Hurst is. It shook, vibrated, and wasn't any shorter AT ALL compared to the factory w/ Saleen.

Wanting a REAL shifter and realizing the Hurst wasn't it, I bought a Pro50 and man what an incredible difference. The Pro is a true, built from scratch shifter just like the Steeda and MGW. You can powershift all day long with the Pro and it has no additional noise and is not notchy like the Hurst. Sure, it is more $$ but really for the extra money, its well worth it. For comparison, as you Hurst owners know, the Hurst is built MUCH like the factory unit- here is a side-by-side to the Pro:

The only reason why I sold the Pro is because my wife bought the MGW gripper shift knob and MGW shifter. I honestly doubt it will be much better than the Pro but I guess I'll find out this week.

Agreed the current Hurst comp plus shifter is not on par with the Pro5.o or MGW, but you are not comparing apples to apples in terms of build materials or price. The Hurst unit is much less expensive and the choice of Ford, Roush and Shelby. Also some of early comp plus shifters in the hurst line did not have the newer pivots in the bottom to prevent the rattle and up and down movement. Now the new billet plus, once released in about 60 days would be a much better comparison and will still be considerably less than the others..

I used the wife as an example of real world experience. Even a non-performance oriented driver has no problems with the Hurst shifter in my real world personal experiences. I have never missed a shift with the Hurst--not once.

You can't use magazine articles as testimony. Remember when the S197 first appeared? AUTOMOBILE said they were 14.2 second cars, while MOTOR TREND said they were like 13.4 second cars. The bottom line is that AUTOMOBILE did not know how to drag race. Take what you read in magazines with a grain of salt. They are mostly opinion and not fact. If a sponsor pays them to give a good review about a product, they will.

I would take real world testimony any day over what a magazine says. They are in the market to sell magazines, not drive cars. They usually have journalism degrees, not an auto related degree. Now I am not saying that someone that does not have an auto related degree is better or worse than someone with a journalism degree, just saying that I would take the opinion from someone who could be considered a professional on the subject over any others.

Anyone can be a backyard mechanic and have great automotive knowledge from experience no matter what their profession. That kind of real world experience shines when directly compared to someone that has no experience.
