What is the black plastic box from the IAC to intake do?

What does that black plastic box that is between the induction tubing and the Inlet Air Control do? Is it just a resonator to cut down on noise, or is it some sort of filter? Can I remove it and just run straight hose? I see where it can be taken apart but am hesitant to do so in case it won't go back together.

Thanks!

Dont listen to the WRX man :D

Its a box to tone down the whistle at idle the IAC makes....or so I have heard. Take the hose off from where it connects to the IAC and fire her up just for fun...im not kidding, the car sounds like it has a very large cam! Friend of mine at a local meetup just did this to his GT (stock cams) and it literly would put mine to shame....actually sounded very good. Ofcourse you cant run around like that, but its fun to try :D

I am still not understanding what hole he plugged. If you remove the Black box, you need to run a longer piece of hose, there is nothing to block off.

A longer hose to what? . He plugged the hole where the box was connected. That box has no hose. Here look at this pic...
