how did you smokers quit?

I have quit smoking and chewing several times. I chew at work, and don't smoke all day. smoke after work at home and things like that. I started chewing when I was 12, started smoking at 18 to help quit chewing. thought cigerettes tasted like crap and thought if I could get a little nicotine from them I wouldn't want to chew. wow did that back fire. I have quit both for a while but my wife smokes and say she can't stop cold turkey. I've tried to get her to quit with me to help support each other and she's not ready. kind of hard when theyre right there all day long.

any ways I had a friend tell me about the tool to quit smoking, it looks just like a cigarette but it is just a filter. when ever you get the urge you just pick it up hold it like a cigarette and instead of sucking in toxic air its just air with your choices of taste. I wish I could remember what it was called but he said it worked for him.

I quit a few years ago using the gum. I started just using it at work, so I would have a smoke before work, gum all day, and smoke on the way home, and a few over the evening. After a couple week,s I would just keep using the gum until supper. Then all evening, and only smoke going into work. I also used each piece of gum for longer, only getting a new piece when I really wanted the nicotine. Eventually I would have a piece of gum on the way to work, spit it out at some point, and just carry the gum everywhere. I would then only smoke when out at a bar or drinking. Eventually, I quit smoking even when drinking. At some point, I stopped using the gum regularly, and just kept a few pieces around. After a while, I threw it away, and was not smoking.

It took a bit of willpower every time I smelled cigarette smoke. That never seemed to stop smelling good, but at some point it got real easy to remember that smoke is poison :)

Was fine for two, three years. Then at a new job, my ******* co-workers would not quit trying to get me to have a smoke with them. Being human, I was eventually back to smoking. I'm sure the increased stress of my gf leaving and starting a new job in a new city wasn't helping. But I was able to quit again a year later quite easily. Then I moved again, started a new job, etc. etc., and now have to quit yet again. Oh well :)

Try it either cold turkey or gradually. You might even see how long you can go cold turkey, doing it over and over until it sticks. It's different for everyone, and the toughest part is not going back.
 
My ex's mother who smoked about 2 packs a day went and got hypnotized to quit smoking. She stopped right there on the spot for about 3 weeks and blamed the kids on starting again.
Since then, A good family friend went and got the same treatment and has been smoke free for about 8 months now.
Something to think about and out of the few people I have known to try it, all have worked to some exstint...
 
I had a heart attack. I'd been wanting to quit anyway but after getting 3 stents put in and having a few days to detox in the hospital from the nicotine I figured it was as good a time as any. Been quit a year and a half now. I had smoked unfiltered Camels for over 35 years. Did it cold turkey except for the 3 days of drugs in the hospital. Before that I tried the patch a couple of times but just ended up wearing the patch and still smoking.

There is a fairly new medicine called Chantix that a lot of people are having success with. It helps control cravings and makes cigarettes taste horrible if you do smoke while on it. At my job, that is one of the things I do is council people on quitting smoking.
 
my wife who has smoked for over 30 yrs has tried hypnotism, patches, cold turkey etc. her doctor prescribed Chantix, she went on the program and it worked....
She has been smoke free over a year. She told her friends about it and it worked for them also.

Good luck. Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs out there.
