Intake/Head question for 331

I am building a 331 and have a question about upper/lower intakes. Will the sn-95 Cobra flow just as well as a Trick flow track heat with some port work? What heads would you recommend? I want to make around 400hp N/A

Thanks for the replies

I agree, for a street car, go with some AFR 185's and a Holley Systemax if you are buying from scratch.

If not, go with the Trickflow Track Heat. Decent shape, good length (12"), and flow 270 cubic feet per minute.

A guy I know has a Systemax for 450 that's been ported to 1262R(I'm guessing that's the gasket size) and powdercoated. Guess I should jump all over it huh?

Not to sound like a dummy but what is the difference between stud mount and pedestal mount heads? Which is better? I was planning on going with the AFR 185's and I'm assuming that flat top pistons won't work. Is that true? Will 30lbs/hr injectors be enough or should I go with 36's?

30 pound injectors will be fine in my opinion with that combination.

Most any decent aftermarket piston with larger valve reliefs will accomadate the 2.02" intake valves.

Stud-mounted, are studs screwed into the block that the roller rockers pivot on.

Pedestal-mounted, are pedestals pressed into the block the the roller rockers pivot on.

If possible, go with stud-mounted rockers. They are easier to adjust and stronger (thicker).

I see you talk about an all motor combo and a goal of 400 rwhp :)

Sounds like a lot of fun :nice:

I'm just curious ... Why 331 as opposed to 347

Not trying to change your mind here :nono:

Just wondering how you came to that decision :)

Like those other folks said above .......
The Holley would be right at home on a Stroker ;)

I too recommend the holley systemax II intake. I don't know that I'd get the one your buddy has as the 1262 gasket sized port will not match up to most of the street heads you are likely to buy for such a combo. The last thing you want is a big lip going into the cylinder head if it's port is smaller. I would NOT get pedestal mount heads. I have them on my car and trust me when I say that you are better off with stud mount. They are better on so many levels that it only makes sense to run them.

You will need to pay very close attention to detail if you want to achieve 400rwhp with your 331. I'd pick an experienced person to help pick the proper parts for the H/C/I package. I have had tremendous luck with http://www.flowtechinduction.com but there are others out there that many swear by. What you will find is that everyone is very passionate about their "guy" that they've used to help them build killer combos. I personally would go with a set of AFR185's with the 7/16" stud upgrade and I'd pick a custom cam that made peak power at around 6000rpms. Put the compression at 10.5:1, add a GREAT set of headers, exhaust, and all of the bolt-ons and a way to tune it and you should get close to your goal. Do some searching to see what others are making with their combos. One thing you will quickly see is that most with basic HCI combos are in the 325-340rwhp range, so use that as a guide to show you what mild combos do and as an indicator as to how much further you may need to step things up to get to your goal.

Very wise words from Mr. Paul :nice:

They kinda show my inquiry about giving up 16 cubes
Those 16 cubes could easily up your rwhp by 16 :Word:

Then ... if you consider your gonna run a b&b'ed short block :D
That ought to be worth another 5rwhp ;)

Just thinking out loud here :)

Im no intake expert but from what Ive researched, the Cobra even ported should give a faster velocity of air and fill the cylinder more quickly at low rpms so it would outorque the Track Heat, and Holley to a point, then at higher revs those 2 would take off and leave the Cobra behind, If I were to go with a Holley or Rpm, Track Heat etc I would gear it(4:10s and cam it (Ed C) (heads too) to stay in that higher power range.

5spd GT's write up really convinced me to go with the 347 instead of the 331. I'll just use the more "streetable" 5.315'' rod and 1.175" piston when I order my CHP kit.

I think the guy that has the Systemax had it on a turbo car so yeah I'm sure the ports are huge and wouldn't match any aftermarket head.

I'm pretty open minded and just sitting on the cash until I can figure out what is going to give me the most bang for the buck.

Thanks for all of your replies!
