Hey Gang:

For those of you that care, I got the N20Jnky into the 10's this past weekend up in Mission... A group of us from the SVT club went up there to play at the Mega Ford Weekend... For those of you that were not there, you missed a very cool event...

On Saturday, the car was running 11.0X and hitting the rev limiter at 6,200 for some reason... On Suday, I put on the short belt, took out the passenger seat, AND removed the wiper blades... Ran back to back 10.9's... Still bangin on the rev limiter so I am going to have to sort that out... Didn't change anything since the last time out and was working fine then, but now it isn't....

So, now it is time to park my 10 second street car, and start the new project...

Oh, did I mention that I bought a NEW coupe roller??? Found it up at Mega Ford -- Tangerine Orange, caged, tubbed, new suspension all around, fully smoothed engine bay -- Simply a beautiful roller!!!! Now I gotta sell the 87 V8 Notch... Any takers????

Oh Snap! Congrats! That's cookin'! So, when are you gonna hook up the silly gas and get her into the 9's:D

I am executing my plan to the letter, excepting how long it took me to get the dang car back together (4 years versus 1 year!!!)... The plan was to tune the motor this summer and get the car into the low 11's... Did that and some... hehehehe... The the plan is to hook up the juice this winter and do a couple of other fine tuning things... The big problem now is that I have 4.10 gears in the rear end and to run the car much faster than 120 mph I'm gonna start spinning the motor higher than I really want to... At the same time, I don't want to sink a ton of $$ into new gears... So -- the spray is going on, but the car will only see the nines one time and then will be a mid to low 10 second car...

Then -- it is off to build the 8 second Notch!!!!

I don't want to sink a ton of $$ into new gears...

Are you still running an 8.8? Because gears are basicaly free...

I usually pay about 15 bucks for gears out of pull a part and install them myself. Most explorers and pickup trucks have 3.55’s and 3.73’s. If your current bearings and such are in good shape all you are paying for is some oil, a gasket, a crush sleave, and gear marking compound.

The 3.55 gears I have in my LX were the ones I had left over after I re-geared my sister’s bronco. Free is key, but cheap is a close second.

You have a very good point, and prolly I could find someone that wanted to trade me their 3.55 gears for my 4.10 gears... However, the cost for me is really in having someone install them... I do a most of the stuff on my car, but have not gotten into rebuilding the rear end... Perhaps it is time to take the plunge and "just do it"... I'll get the bottle hooked up and then make the call... My cage is only certified to 10.0 any way, so that will be my next barrier - one which I will not cross more than once *grinning* as I don't want the hassle of the additional tubing required for an 8.5 certified cage...

I like the way you are thinking, however!!!!

I knew you'd do it! Well done!! You'll have to tell me about the event when we next meet.

What are the details on the coupe you are selling? I remember that it was set up for the stock class back East.

If you keep you eyes on Craigslist, you'll find an 8.8 with 3.55's or 3.73's. They're pretty common. Rebuilding the Trac Loc is easier than installing the pinion and you'd have a spare 8.8, a good idea for a racer.

John:

Mega Ford was Mega Fun!!! The racers up there are extremely friendly, the track was well prepared, and there were some very fast (6 second) cars. I just ran in the Street Ford class, which was basically test and tune. Brandon ran in the Enduro which was five back to back runs without shutting down your engine. A definate go-to event for next year!!!

The coupe I am selling is an 87 that was started as a Factor Stock car. It has been stripped of all weight (manual window, no a/c, no heat - but can be added, no radio - but can be added). The motor is stock, with aftermarket shorties. Engine is high mileage, but strong. I never ran it, but it had a low 13 time slip in the car when I bought it. The rear end is a built 8.8 that has 4.30 gears and welded axle tubes. The tranny is a built AOD with a LenTech full manual VB and transbrake. Aluminum drive shaft with loop. Weld draglites all around with MT ET Streets. Car needs paint.

Thanks for the advice about the short belt, because that is what it took to get the car into the 10's!!!

I think that I will just stay with the 4.10 set up. I have an E-locker in the rear end which I like and this car is now going to be pretty much a dedicated street car. While up at the Mega Ford, I bought a 91 roller coupe that is already caged, tubbed, and painted with the engine bay smoothed. It is going to be my dedicated strip car which we are going to drop a 427 (already built) and large frame turbo. Hoping to put the car into the high 8's which should not be a problem given that I watched a 331 w/ twin 61mm turbos run high 8's at 161 this weekend!!!!

It’s really pretty easy, just take your time and take all the crucial measurements.

If you want to learn how, something like this would be a good way to get your feet wet, because you are only changing one major component (gears). The more things you change the more time it takes to get all the critical characteristics in line.

I would be willing to bet that if you only change the gears (and what ever seals, crush sleeve, etc. are needed) and you if you keep the shims exactly where they are now (assuming it is set up properly now) there is an 85% chance it will be perfect the first time around, expecialy if you use factory ford gears (that are in good serviceable shape of course).

Once you get it nailed down, you will wonder why you ever paid a rear end guy so much…

O-yeah, congrats on the 10 sec pass!

Nice job Earl!! Man I wish i could have went to that race, sounds like it was a pretty good time. Oh well I guess there is always next year (same thing I said last year). Hey did Mike go by chance with his Cyclone? Tim told me he was thinking about going.
Oh and what are you trying to get for that notch? Maybe I could buy it and do a quick tranny swap and resale it or something. I would love to have an O.D. again.

EJ:

I don't think Mike was there with his car...

I am looking for $3500 if I don't have to put the interior back in... $4,000 if I do... Either way, it is a very good deal... Built tranny w/ Lentech full manual VB and O/D delete... Built 8.8 rear end w/ welded tubes, full UPR suspension front and back, subframes, aluminum shaft and loop, shorty headers and dumps, fun car to drive... I'm actually struggling with myself about selling or just keeping and turning it into a solid commuter... This is an original V8 car to boot...

Let me know if you are interested...
