Which 351 headers etc?

If your going to spend the money on a pair of good headers and your not sure if they are going to fit why not go to someone that can make you a custom pair for $400-$600. Im not sure where you live but if you can find a custom exhaust shop they should have an guy that can make you a pair.

You can't get a set of headers custom made for 600 bux, the raw materials are just too expensive these days. The flanges alone are like 250 bux.

Check with Dougs headers.

Edit:
351w and 289/302 heads have the same bolt patern so a 289/302 header should fit just fine. The only issue might be with the angle that the collector pipe comes in at, you might have to heat it and bend it out so it doesn't run into the trans.

What type of trans do you have ? Autos are actually easier in this case because you don't have to deal with the clutch linkage.

Are header for a 351 not bigger in the primaries? As well as the h-pipe?

its a T5 with stock linkage

You should be able to fit some good Tri-Ys on there.

The primary tubes may be a different size, they may not. Depends on the headers you use.

If you don't care about having headers then use a set of 69 or 70 351w manifolds and have them ported. They will flow just as good as headers.

Heddman makes swap headers for 351w equipped 65/66 with 1 5/8" primaries (for mild engines), and Hooker makes Super Comps for them as well (if you've got a more serious build). The Heddmans are cheap... less than $150 shipped. The super comps are pricier but very nice.

I may have a spare set of unported manifolds. I can check with weekend if you like.

The Tri-Ys are out there.

Dougs are among the best you can get if you want a true header and they do make one to fit yer application I believe.

What year is your Mustang BTW ?

I don't think Tri-Ys will work on a 65/66.

I'd just go with the Hooker Super Comps. Great brand, great performance, shouldn't have any fit issues, godo quality. Not cheap but not particulary ridiculous either (~$300 iirc).

ported manifolds flow nothing like headers especially on 351 cubes.

I agree, and they are heavier.

But they will flow better that the 67 289 manifolds on there now and can always be swapped out with shorties without reworking the exhaust later.

The 69 and 70 351w manifolds when properly ported will out flow a large variety of headers.

They are however, heavier.

IMO the porting only really would seem to have utility in applications where stock appearance is desired or where money is really, really at a premium. Before they had 65-66 swap headers, porting the stock manifolds (or modifying other headers) was your only option... so I would have understood.

The Heddman Hedders run about $150 new. They're not the greatest pieces but they work fine. Now, if 6-10 hrs of grinding and dremel work is worth $150 (and I realize to some that it is), the porting might be attractive. But IMO, it wasn't.

Rusty... you've always been a strong advocate of porting the stockers. Any links/articles that show they can actually flow like a decent set of headers?

I would think that the near 90 degree angles alone would prevent even an optimally ported stock exhaust manifold from coming near most headers. On my old stock 351w manifolds, the gas would come out of the port, be angled straight down then have to get swept away at 90 degrees to the rear... even if you widen the pipe thats far from an optimal flowpath (two near 90 degree bends).

Also... I seem to remember people saying K-code exhaust manifolds are noticeably better flow-wise. Might be worth picking up a set of those instead of stock 351w manifolds if that is the case and you decide on that route.

No articles on that, just friends that use to race all the time. Not all manifolds can be ported out to flow well but some can. You can pay someone to port them out properly and it isn't that expensive. If headers are 600 bux it can be worth it. If you can buy even crappy headers for 150 that will fit well then the price point may not justify the work.
