its my first time doing a gear swap and i was wondering if this pattern would be ok or not. this is with the factory pinion shim and side shims. thanks for your opinions in advance! :D

you really should buy a dial indicator, there cheap and gears will make tons of noise or even break if now setup correctly. Pinion depth is also extreamly important. I would paint about 4-5 teeth and see what your looking at. Looks like you should start by taking 5 thousands off the pinon shim. remember that when you do that your going to need a new chrush sleeve and everything. Backlash needs to be close to 10-15 thousands before you can accuratly check pinion depth. Its a pain in the ass without a master housing depth tool.

getting closer. i removed the factory shims and installed a .044" shim (thicker than the factory shims) and it looks better. now i will check backlash and yes i will be using a dial indicator.

in the pic you can see drive side and coast side, they are a little closer to the toe side of the ring gear but they are both the same, indicating correct pinion depth, right?
now to adjust the backlash and viola i should be good. :flag:

nice. i love the day after a gear swap-its like i picked up 50 rwhp
going from 2.73 to 3.73 with my mods should be fun.

thanks for the help guys

btw to remove the nasty yellow stuff, is brake clean ok?

brake clean is fine, a little of the yellow left on the teeth wont hurt anything. dont forget to add the friction modifier to the fluid.

if you have a big cam the dif between 2.73 and 3.73 is HUGE!!!!!!!!!

^^^thats insane! you're car must run really well because the x cam is pretty stout.

oh well, maybe ill just go ahead and do the swap now and see what happens. come smog time. ;)

know of anyone getting rid of a tfs1 of b cam?
