Check out tailofthedragon.com for info on the Tail of the Dragon road at Deals Gap, NC. On this website you can find weather and road condition information along with various maps of great area motorcycle and sports car roads. You can also find hotel, cabin and camping info as well as travel safety and sightseeing tips for the area. There are some amazing pictures, too.
I have been on most of the roads around there on bikes and cars. Don't miss the dragon, it's an amazingly fun road to drive. Super fun smooth cambered curves for miles. Stay in your lane and look out for the occasional knucklehead crossing into your lane and get a t-shirt when your done.
Near Robbinsville, NC where my son and I stay at Phillips Motel cause the price is good, you can find the Cherohala Skyway for a scenic drive that takes you up to 5,000 feet altitude with great views along the way. We drive across the skyway to Tellico Plains, eat lunch, then cruise back the other way. After that we run the dragon 3 or 4 times and call it a day. NC HWY 28 has some great sections to drive from Deals Gap to Fontanna Village to the top of Fontanna Dam which you can drive across.
When we head for the mountains from Raleigh we get on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Asheville and take it all the way to Cherokee. It goes up over 6.300 feet and has 17 tunnels (my son counted) on the route.
Any way, lots of great drives to be found. Enjoy the mustang. I'm looking to get one soon. Since 1979 I've had 3 Z28's and 2 Mustang GT's, it's time to even the score.
