im going satin black paint advice

so my car is a black 2000 GT, the previous owner replaced the hood because a trailer hitch backed into it. and he did some bodywork above the passenger rear wheel where it looked like he hit it on a pole while backing or something. anyway the paint has been sanded in some spots and other spots are stock gloss paint, and its just generly crappy looking paint. it has flat black cobra wheels, and i like the street fighter'ish look that my car has and a nice satin paint job i think will look very dark and mean looking. i have painted a few of my own cars and they have turned out good, so i am confident i can do the job. i have a shop to spray in, and the equipment needed. my main question is what paint do i use? i would like to use a sprayer and clear it, and do it real nice. i have used rust tuff semi flat spray paint on a toyota truck of mine and it surprisingly turned out very nice, no runs, all the paint looked consistent ect. so if it comes down to it i will do this and i know i can make it look good, but i dont know if that method will stay looking decent for a while. on my toyota i rarely ever washed it and it was a wheeler so it was constantly being scratched and dented, and i didnt have it for long after so i never saw how the paint held up to the test of time. anyway i want to go for this on my gt and i just need to know what are my options here, do i need to spray with satin and then clear, or will the rattle can job stay looking nice? i have seen a lot of cars rattle canned primer black that looked horible, so dont think im shootin for the primer honda look here, haha i know i can make this look good. thanks for the help guys

You are in luck my friend :D , I just happen to know a thing or two about Satin Black , I sprayed my mustang 5 years ago and the paint I used was PPG .

Paint : DBU 9700 Black
Reducer : DRR 1170

Clear : DCU 2060 Flexed "N" Flat
Clear : DCU 2021
Reducer : DT 885
Hardener : DCX 61

Ok now the hard part , but you paint cars so you should understand , If you want a eggshell 20-30% gloss the DCU 2021 (standard clear ) and DCU 2060 are mixed : parts by volume , 10 parts 2060 1 part 2021 , that mix is then blended 4 parts with 1 part reducer 885 1 part hardener DCX 61.

If you want Flat mix 6 parts DCU 2060 1 part reducer 885 1 part DCX 61 !

Hope this helps , its been 5 years so remembering is takes some time but If you have ?'s I will help !

Also look in my album , the Satin on my Mustang is 20-30 % gloss !

ok so hrs of searching and i finaly found something besides really expensive house of kolor type stuff or spray cans. take a look at this link and tell me what you think. i think with the right prep, shop temp and a spray gun and this paint will do good. i cant find pricing on the site, so i guess i will have to call them or something tomorow. the guy who linked me to that said it was around $50 a gallon, but im not sure. but hell at 50 dollars a gallon you cound paint it as many times as you needed to haha.

i did not see your post before i posted that link to the kirker paint. thanks for the info though. what is the cost on the ppg paint that you recomend? and do you clear that paint? i would like to have a clear coat so that bird crap and stuff dosent leave stains in the pourus flat paint, i have had stuff like that and gas and stuff stan the flat. and also what mixture would you recomend? as far as looks i guess i just want it the darkest flat black i can make it, if it turns out more semi flat or slightly glossy thats ok. so for the darkest clean looking flat black what mixture? also what exactly do you mean about eggshell 20-30%? im going to check out your albums right now and see how urs turned out. thanks a ton for the help :nice:

I paid around 500 for everything 5 years ago , and I still have a few pints of paint a clear left , 20-30% stands for the amount of DUC 2021 standard clear mixed with the DUC 2060 Flex N Flat clear , 0% would be Flat , 100% would be high gloss , I went with 20-30 % and it has an eggshell (satin) finish !

If you paint your car with base black and clear it with the DUC 2060 mixed with DUC 2021 you would get something close to what I have on my Mustang, which is pretty dark when its clean , but it gets dirty fast and it shows , thats the down side .

i checked out your albums, your car turned out very nice! the screen on my comp sucks bad and everything looks real dark so i cant tell 100% how dark your car actually is but it looks real good. if that paint you recomend turns out to be not to expensive than i think i will probably go that route because i like your results.

here is a pic of my car you can see how the front fenders and door are flat already, but very crappy flat. and the roof and rear quarters are stock gloss. bassicaly the flat parts of my car are about the right shade and color, which looks prety close to what you ended up with. i think it will be good. and im going to respray the wheels the same color. i cant wait for the weather to warm up so i can get to spraying.

(edit) also i cant find pricing on the ppg on the net. so i will make some phone calls tomorow and find out the current pricing. on the other hand i found the kirker paint is $53.99 a gallon and $20.00 for the activator. you know alot more about the paint products than me, will you check out the link on the kirker paint for me and tell me what you think of it. there is a pdf in that link that tells the specs on the paint. im kinda feelin like $75 bucks for paint is worth it just to see if i can pull it off haha. what do you think would happen if you cleared over this kirker paint? thanks again

Well the Kirker paint looks like good stuff for the price and alot cheaper then the PPG and you may get just as good a paint job as long its painted right and cleared , also you can clear over this paint but I did not see if they make a satin clear but they say you can use other products with their stuff , so if they dont have a satin or flat clear you can use the PPG Flexed "N" Flat clear mixed with a little bit of standard clear to get the amount of satin you want !

The best thing about the Flexed "N" Flat is that you dont have to mix a Flexible additive when clearing your car , hence the name Flexed "N" flat :D
