Hi, I just came in possession of a 65 mustang. It's a 289 2 barrel coupe. Original color is Rangoon Red but it's been painted over. Anyhow, I have to do a rebuild on the engine. I checked the piston compressions and all but one are varying between 140 and 160 psi. Cylinder number 3 is 90 psi. We did the oil test and got it to increase to 100 psi.
I've never done an engine rebuild so this is going to be the car I will learn on. I do have access to a machine shop with cnc lathes and mills with 4th axis capability for those jobs where I might need one.
I guess for right now I'm just doing my research to prepare. I would like to know what all entails of an engine rebuild. What items do I need to replace without question and where do I obtain such items. What items or additional work will I have to look out for when I tear it apart in regards to wear and tear or damage to the motor. Lastly, i've looked around online for parts but there seem to be alot of websites out there and I wonder who are the best guys for parts. Now, my intent is to restore her to her original "brand new" condition, color, accessories, and all. (although, I might add the power steering because they did offer them in 1965 and there's nothing in the VIN that says whether a car had one or not.)
Hmm, there was one other thing. A friend once told me that it might be a 65a mustang that was manufactured with some of the 64.5 parts. I'm not sure if this is the so called 65a but I do know the manufactured date is Dec 12, 1964....
