drag racers-when is it time to upgrade the carrier?

I have to rebuild the posi unit in the 91 soon. I was thinking of uprading the axles to mosers also. I plan on running slicks at the track in the near future as well as putting a hefty shot of nos to the built motor. I know the t5 is still the weakest point and stock axles don't last long paired with slicks. But when is it time to upgrade to 31 or 33 spline axles and carrier? I'd rather spend the money ones instead of twice. thanks

i would be more worried about the t-5 than the axles or carrier, they are cheaper to replace than a trans IMO.. depending on how you drive all of those components should be replaced if you are using full slicks and going to be launching the thing really hard..i have a g force t-5 in my car and i have no worries about that breaking for a long time.

I would never rebuild the stock rear, with stock parts. Not that the factory stuff is bad, but having it done twice sucks.
I also would never do a full rear rebuild myself, too many back yard mechanics screw them up and destroy hundreds in parts.

Get some 31 spline axles and an eaton center section. I run an auburn, which has been good to me for 10 years, but here and there i see some complaints about it.
If you want discs, now is the time for that too.

What does the NHRA rule book say?? thats when. Now that being said lol, I ran 31 spline axles for years with a Ford diff. that I had the clutches stacked in and the fiber ground off the clutch plate so they would not wear out and they didnt they would just brake the ears off it got to the point where I was rebuilding the rear 1 to 2 times a year depended on how much I drove the car (this is a auto car) the thing about it they would brake at the worst time like in the semi rounds at the track a few times and I would lose the race due to wheel spin. So I moved up to a mini spool that lasted 1 year broke it to then I move to a full spool and 33 splines it don't brake any more and I love it, peace of mind you know. it is really not to bad on the street, just real tight parking lots I would do it again and again and not think twice. this was when I reached the high 10s with 1.50 60 fts before I went to the 33 spline set up. The 33 spline set up as been bullet proof gone much faster but it should be also. But I also have a customer that runs high 10s with stock stuff and a lincoln locker (you know welded up rear) but it is also a auto car.

How fast do you plan on going, most tracks require removal of the c-clip style retainer, you can do it 2 ways, get c-clip eliminator axles or swap to a 9" end. I went from moser 31 spline c-clip axles to custom lenght moser axles set up for a 9" end, welded up the tubes and put my eaton posi back in that i have had for the last 4 or 5 years with no issues.

In the end if i saved all the money i had into my rear, i probably could have built a 9" by now

I don't plan on having a drag only car. But I really do want to launch the car hard on slicks. The track I go to is more concerned with checking to see if you are leaking anything than safety regulations. I know it's for my protection, but they rarely check to see if you even have a helmet. I'm hoping for mid 11's on motor and low 10's on spray. I was just curious as to the limitations of the stock carrier. Not saying it doesn't happen, but i haven't seen any 8.8's destroy the carrier. But i have seen plenty snap axles. So, I guess my question is: Should I buy 28 spline c-clip axles and rebuild the posi, weld the tubes amd run with it? Or step up to 31's and a aftermarket carrier? Hate the spend the extra money if the stock set up will do. Also, hate to have not spent the extra and find myself buying a new carrier down the road. Thanks for your replies.

Go with the eaton and 31 spines.
If your car is really going to be as fast as you suggest, stock axles are dangerous.
You wouldn't be the first guy to break one and have the whole axle come out.
