I recently bought a rear (rotor to rotor) from a guy on craigslist,he told me that it was from his wife's car that had been hit bad in the front, and that he bought a shell and transferred everything over except the rear, which he pulled and held on to.well when I went to get it it seemed to rotate smoothly,so I bought it and proceeded to install it,after it was installed I weas turning the pinion flange and it locked up at the same spot,so now my spyder senses are tingling, and I pull the cover, and low and behold the ring gear has like 7or 8 teeth that are rusty.I pulled the carrier hoping it was just surface rust, but it seems like some of the teeth are pitted.so I call him and he says that all I need is a new ring and pinion, and that the housing and carrier are fine, which may well be the case, but im gonna have to spend like $300 bux for r&p and bearing kit.he totally screwed me.but I still know where he lives.

Whats the complaint here? Seriously anytime i have bought or used a "used" or "junkyard" rear end assembly i have had them rebuilt. There is no telling how long they have sat with or without fluid and what other contamination in there.

the complainty is the fact that I was told that it was a low mileage rear in good shape.he never said anything like"it will need to be rebuilt" or "im not sure about how good it is" he said that it was a low mileage rear with nothing wrong with it.

if I wanted to pay to have one rebuilt I would have just plopped down $600.00 and have someone do it to the cars existing rear, but $150.00 seemed a lot better

You should have pulled the cover off of it before you bought it.

Ding ding ding ! :Word:

Caveat emptor, especially with USED parts. Lots of dishonesty floating around out there among the various classified venues(Ebay/Craigslist/message boards, etc, etc).

Even if it wasn't the seller's intention to defraud you, OP, you should have performed due diligence and taken a few minutes to inspect the goods before agreeing to the swap - not a flame BTW, just stating a reasonable point, for both sides.

i bring a tool bag and tools everytime i go to "purchase" used parts. if the seller fefuses to let me plunder at the parts i politly tell em to kiss off and look else where. imo you should NEVER take someones word on anything used, even "NEW" stuff now a days

The rear end probably did work fine when he removed it but how long ago was that before you bought it. Moisture in the air can and will get into the rear end and cause some surface rust. Some pitting is perfectly okay as well when dealing with a used ring gear. Did you drive it and see if it was making noises or?? At $150 you still got a good deal imho. A new ring and pinion from summit is $150 and you got an entire rear end.

Don't be cheap if you want UARANTEED *****. Buy new,or don't buy at all. If you stray from this, pay he consequences.

Pretty much this. It is a risk buying from CL. I have had some ****ty experiences but hey, it happens and you just do your best to continue forward. I rarely use CL anymore because of all the low lifes selling junk on there.
