I figured I would add to the list of useless question threads in the talk section. I searched but all I could find is people bitching about exhaust fumes.

Interestingly enough I found out through a little research that the new car smell causes cancer, little fun fact there for you.

Anyways my car is 23 years old and has sat for a little while, the smell closely resembles a stale fart. I have used different air fresheners but my interior is super absorbent to any decent smell and quickly extinguishes it with a poo poo smell. My friends 350z smells f ing amazing and all he could tell me is that it was pina colada.... What do you guys use in your car to keep it smelling good, and how long does it last? Is there anything I can do to get the old smell out of my car?

Well stop farting in it! :D

Mine has that old car that sits in the garage smell... because that's what it is.

For one thing, clean it, and I mean wet clean it. Use an extractor machine or something that is going to flow liquid in there and suck it out using a solvent that kills bacteria and nutralizes odors. Distilled white vinegar does this. Lysol the vents.... just lots of things to get old odors out.

My car has or had(been a while since sat in)that funky stale smell. I wish it had the same smell as my Lexus but oh well its 22yrs old and to be honest I could care less as long as it doesnt smell like a dead human or animal. I am pretty sure almost all the cars around that age smell weird by todays standards. lol(And I actually laughed and out loud).

I used to work at a tire shop that somewhat detailed cars and when we got in work trucks with muddy carpet we would completely remove the carpet and pressure wash it and then use a shop vac to remove most of the water soap and dirt, but when I did that to my own truck this musty smell lingered for a while, anything I could do differently to not have that happen?

We did the same to the seats but it seems to me the foam is too absorbent to do that without soaking it all the way to the core.

I'm guessing a lot of weird car smells come from the carpet and seats. I changed out my carpet and it was a world of difference. The stuff under the carpet was trashy and smelled pretty bad. All good after the change :) Not sure if you wanna go that route but it helped my car smells quite a bit.

I swapped in some sn95 leather seats in my car and I think the previous owner used a lot of vanilla fresheners b/c it always smells like vanilla! Score!

Mine just smells old. If youve been around enough old cars its a very common smell. I think its a mix of all the interior materials heating and cooling and breaking down over the years, like glues and dust. Mine got better when i took the carpet out but it still smells old. I wouldnt say it stinks...its just the opposite of new car smell.

It doesn't smell like Casey Anthony's, but sometimes it gets really stale in there, especially when it's been closed up for a while. After the gear swap all I smelled was gear oil even though I never got any of that stuff in the interior (that I know of). It's an old car. I put 2 "new car smell" fresheners in it the other day, one in the car and one in the trunk. It's better, but I think I'll start looking at new carpeting.

Mine has always had that old muscle car smell. A mix of unburnt hydrocarbons and old interior materials, like 85_SS_302_Coupe said. I wouldn't change it for anything, in fact, I have never once used any sort of air freshener in my car. I've had people get in the car after a long time of not being in it, and they say "Oh yea... Still smells like the Mustang".

THIS! Burning oil, burning rubber, trans fluid, coolant, rich exhaust fumes and I wouldnt change it for the world.

I hate new car smell, it smells like money getting sucked from my wallet.
