tranny help

Here is my situation: I got an 87 gt completley origanal in a trade from a friend. Car is completley solid with no rust at all. I got it with no tanny. It was origanal with a T5. I have the bell housing, cross member, exhaust mount, and drive shaft. What are my options? I kinda want to stay economical, so a new one is outa the question. Will a 3650 out of a newer model work and are they stronger? Second thought is to put a 6spd in my 2000 gt and use the t45 in the 87. Would that idea work? The end result is going to be a street/strip setup. Planning on the normal heads, intake, and cam etc, with all the normal supporting gear. Thanks for any advise. The project is in the planning stages right now.

A 3650 or T45 wil not work with a SBF. The bellhousing on those are part of the trans case and no one currently makes an adapter plate. If they did if would probably be more trouble than it's worth. Sounds like a used T5 is your only option. There are other options but if a new T5 is out of the question then the other options are too.

You can pick up T5's used fairly cheap. Can't know for sure what kind of shape it's in, but I'd just make sure it is going into every gear and is spinning freely. You can probably find a used for under $200. There was one on craigslist not long ago for $75, but again who knows what kind of shape it's in.
