Let me start off by saying that I've just begun learning about the mechanics of my car.
I am in no way more knowledgeable about my car then maybe a freshmen taking
his 1st HS auto class haha.

I have a 2004' Convertible (as the thread states) and it started to do something very concerning to me a few months back. I've talked to all my mustang owning friends and "die-hards" but they can't seem to come up with anything, so I figured next best thing would be Stangnet.

When I put my car in gear after it hasn't been driven for a period of time (usually over night, or while I'm at work) the idle makes a sound like its slowly dying/losing power (it would be impossible for me to put the sound on here aside from a video posting, and I may have to do that to). However, when I put the car into park it idles back up and sounds perfectly healthy. The kicker is that after I've driven it for about 30 seconds there are no more idle issues.

Also, if I'm putting gas to it there are no issues its only if I let it sit and idle in drive or reverse and again, if I'm getting the RPM's up the issue goes away instantly. Really confused as to what could be the problem.

--Self checks and fixes I've tried--
  • I thought maybe it might need some new spark plugs, but the Motorcraft platinum plugs I have are still nearly perfect.
  • I can still see through the Air filter so that isn't causing an issue.
  • Throttle body is clean and clear.
  • New battery was installed about a month ago.

im not much more knowledgeable than you, but maybe your air/fuel ratio is off? that was the problem with mine about a month ago and it sounds like that could be it, but im just tossing out ideas here. also, someone told me to clean my iac and it might work on mine, so maybe you should try it?

I'm guessing maybe your Idle Air Control Valve? They do go bad from time to time. I just replaced mine and it fixed an intermittent idle issue I had. Luckily for me the IAC on my 01 is only $51, but I think its in the $80's range for the 04.

As for cleaning the IAC, if your IAC is going bad, cleaning it will just buy you some time. Cleaning isnt a permanent solution.

Thanks guys, its good advice regardless if it turns out to be the issue or not. I just ordered some stuff off of American Muscle, so in about a week I'll be doing installs and that will give me the perfect opportunity to look into these possible solutions.

The suggestions and ideas are much appreciated.

Replacing the IAC is about a 5 minute job if you don't want to wait. Its right on top. Two bolts a computer plug and a hose.
