My 92's intake manifold is old and stained. Yet take off the "5.0 HO" plate and you can see the silver/steel color is still under there somewhere. I have tried numerous "cleaning" agents and am on my way to an acid such as muriatic. But before i go there i thought it wise to ask for insight from those that may have gone before. Anyone successfully cleaned up all the old stains from the intake without repainting? What did you use?

Pull it off and hit it with a nice fine glass bead. Not strong enough to strip the paint, but might be strong enough to remove the stain. If that doesn't get rid of it, then it's time to paint. The stain has etched itself in and isn't going anywhere without stripping the old paint.

As far as cleaning grease and stains under hood go, I've always had great luck with this....

You can get it just about anywhere, but I doubt even it will clean years worth of set in stain on your intake. Unless the paint is flaking, I wouldn't even strip it. Just give it a good wash, a light scuff and paint right over the old stuff.

Just make sure you don't cheap out on the paint...especially if you go base/clear. A lot of clear coat paints will yellow with the under hood heat. If that happens, It'll change the colour of your intake, yet again.

If you do a little looking, you can probably find someone selling one local for next to nothing. I gave away or scrapped the last three I had.
i have seen a few. all seem to have flaws like mine. 20ish years of heat and usually no maintenance and they all look burnt bronze. i'll paint mine and still keep an eye out for a perfect one.

Actually....if you're pulling it off and paint anyway, why not pick yourself up an Explorer intake ('96 or early '97) instead? Pick up 10-15hp, still keep that factory look and your stock "5.0 HO" plate will bolt right to it? You can get them for a song now a days.
