I asked if they made 5w50 for use in the new cars since I couldn't find it on their US Mobil1 site, but it's on their European site. Here's their response.

We do manufacture a 5w50, but this Mobil product will not meet the ford requirements of the super charger or motor. Our 5w50 is formulated for high performance European applications. Our recommendation would be to stick with the motor craft 5w50 for optimum performance and protection.

Are they trying to say my motor is too good for their product and high performance European cars have lower standards?

They were trying to tell you their product is good, but not good enough without sounding like saying their product sucks. Ford does have higher standards in certain instances believe it or not. If Mobil 1 told you that their oil did meet Ford's specifications then they would be opening themselves up to lawsuits involving failed engines if it were proved 5W-50 Mobil 1 oil was used in them.

Just goes to show you Mobil 1 isn't the holy grail of oil like a lot of people think.

I think that message says more about the fact they, like other oil companies, have oils not approved for Ford and other manufacturers. I believe in the future, Mobil 1 will develop a 5-50 suitable to Ford standards. There in the business to provide an alternative product and will, at some point, meet the requirements. I don't believe it reveals anything negative about Mobil 1.

Agreed, the just have not gone through Ford certification process. And they are just covering their a$$.

I've been using Mobil 1 since I got my '01 Bullitt and haven't had any problems with it. If by the time an oil change was do, usually 5k and the oil was still clean, I have to wonder about the detergent agents being used. I rather my oil looked like coffee coming out than leave the crud the detergents clean out in the engine. If you oil ain't dirty by changin' time, your oil ain't workin'.

That being said, with my '11, I don't put enough miles on it to wait until it get's to 5k as that would take at least two years. 8) So, I change it every year...
