Checking crankshaft end play

I want to check crankshaft end play and wondering which area in the crank do I insert the feeler gauge? And what size feeler gauge should go in?

use a dial indicator on the snout of the crank and rock the crank back and forth with a pry bar

I borrowed my friends dial indicator and I only have .002 of crankshaft end play. What can I do to increase the end play?

Is the crank new or used? New bearings I suppose? Just curious. And if everything is ok and you are checking it correctly, you can remove the bearing and sand it on a flat surface with 1500 grit sand paper with oil.

It is a oem used crank and the journals are polished and bearings are new. How many bearings do I sand? Just 1 of them?

The thrust bearing and only on the sides. Search google.

The crank thrust bearing is the one in the center journal, BTW.

That's total play if you pry back and forth, right?

Do I sand both thrust bearings? The one in the block and in the main cap? And sand both sides of the bearing?

Hold on a minute! unbolt the thrust bearing cap, rock the crank back and forth, then bolt the cap on and incrementally torque it down, while you're doing that rock the crank back and forth as you tighten it. This will align the thrust bearing, you may have more play than you think.

When I unbolt the thrust bearing cap, do I also unbolt the other caps?
