I also say that you need to check the plugs. My "tick" sounded like an exhaust leak, so I didn't mess with it. I had one blow out a week or so later. I could have prevented it if I had checked the plugs. I fixed it myself, but that wasn't too fun. At least the one that blew was in a good place.

Sounds like the light switch is bad. I had one go bad on a 1990 Ford Escort GT. The lights would cut off at night while I was driving and then cut back on a few seconds later. Dangerous!

Just hook a voltmeter to the battery terminals with the car off (battery should have over 12 volts), then with the car running (battery should have over 14 volts). If the voltage with the car running is lower that when the car was off, you have a bad alternator. Bill
