I would like to know what the stock exhaust size is on a 1997 Cobra. Is it 2 1/4 or 2 1/2? I think it is 2 1/2. We are thinking about buying a pair of mufflers for it, but I need to know what size before we buy them. I can't get a straight answer from Summit or Jegs etc. What size should I get? What would sound best on a convertible? I was thinking stainless 50 series Flowmaster. This is for a car that is daily driven by a my dad who is in his 60's. Thoughts?

IIRC, the factory exhaust system is 2 1/4" diameter. Take a look underneath and make sure the stock system is still in place (disregard if you are the original owner).

Sound is a very subjective matter, what sounds good to your ears may sound like garbage to another person's ears. Select the style that suits you (chambered mufflers = old school sound, straight through mufflers = more exotic sounding). Listen to different exhaust systems in person first (ie - car shows, cruises, etc) before you buy a new set of pipes or mufflers - it's the best way to judge it for yourself...

    G'luck.

Hey guys, thanks for the information. We plan on keeping the rest of the exhaust stock. I noticed that the stainless 50 series Flowmasters have nearly the same size dimensions as the factory mufflers. So, that would make swapping them out easier.

I usually prefer the sound of chambered mufflers. However, this is on conventional pushrod V8s like my F150 and 5.0 Mustangs I have heard. I am going to run original 40 series on my 65 when it is drivable. I just didn't want my Dad's Cobra to be obnoxious and drive him nuts. That is why I was thinking about the 50 series.

I have heard several of the modular Cobra 4.6 with different exhaust setups. I just never knew what they were running for exhaust. I have heard a couple that sounded horrible though. One guy I talked to said that he had Magnaflow and no cats. His car did not sound good. I will try to listen to a few more and find out what they have on their cars at the local Saturday night cruise in / car show we have here.

I know I'm reviving an old thread but we still haven't changed the mufflers on the Cobra.

I used to be a fan of Flowmaster. The more I hear it and the more I ride in vehicles that have it, I can say that I actually hate it now. It sounds exageraged and hollow and drones. I got rid of the crappy Blowmasters on my 65 and went with Dynomax Ultraflo on it. I am considering Magnaflow possibly for the Cobra. I have Magnaflow on my F150 now and really like it.

I'm curious of something though. What is the actual design of the factory Cobra mufflers? Are they made like a turbo muffler? I'm just wondering if we are really going to gain anything by changing them. I can say that I would rather have them than Slowmaster crap.
