Well, I took my 06 Mustang GT to the 1/8 mile strip. My car is stock except for UDP. I am running Nitto 450 250/17/50s. The car is manual.
1st couple of runs I was launching at 2500. I was getting massive wheel spin and hop. The times where as followed:
    60' 2.9
    1/8 mile 10.69
    speed 74.81

After dropping the PSI to 25 and launching around idle my time improved.
    60' 2.510
    1/8 mile 9.667
    speed 76.7

Next run was a little faster
    60' 2.43
    1/8 mile 9.487
    speed 77.614

Would lCA help? I was thinking about new tires. This is my daily driver and I drive about 30 miles to work, so I think drag radials would be out. Would BFG TA KDWS be an okay choice. Thanks.

Those are good times. I could not get traction to save my life.

The BFG TA KDWS are a decent tire for the money. I ran them twice at the track and was able to get 2.0 60' times all day long! I've read where some others on here got them down into the 1.9s and 1.8s!
Here is a run of mine from last spring at full weight(including spare tire/jack, Shaker 1000 amps/subs and all seats)with 4.10s, O/R H pipe, 93 octane tune and WMS CAI.

Where are you racing(state)? I believe track conditions weren't ideal for you at all. From the car's standpoint, it should be capapble of running very low 9s-very high 8s in stock form.

The track is in Lakeside CA. The elevations, which was about 1300' probably did not help. Track conditions I could not really gauge. The only other car with street radials was a newer GTO, and a Subaru WRX STi with what I was told...board heads. The GTO was running mid 8s and the STi did 8.6. All other cars where running drag radials or slicks.

Those 60's are just killing you. They best I could get out of street tires was about 2.1. I know a lot of people are getting less, but maybe it's the track prep. My best 60's came from from holding the RPM's just over 1k and slipping the clutch out. Then slamming it through the gears. My best 1/8 with only a few mods was 8.771@81.86. This is all on stock 3.31's. Basically, you really need to learn on launching. If you're spinning at all, you're wasting time. It's better to baby it off the line than spin the tires. It just takes practice.

If you are getting bad wheel hop, steeda sells a "stop the hop" kit that has upper and lower control arms which could help you out. Unless you are driving the car all winter, you could probably get tires with better grip than the BFG KDWS. All season tires in general aren't great in dry conditions.

I just looked up the Steeda Kit, not a bad price at $299. What tire would you recommend? I was looking at some test results on tire rack and the BFG KDWS was the best in terms of dry grip. What about Nitto 555 extreme?

My best 60' on the 235/55/17's was a 1.9. I launched at 4500-5000 rpms, slipped the clutch quick, hit 6k, slammed into 2nd and only chirped, shifted into 3rd at 6200rpms, and crossed the traps in 3rd at 6000 or so and ran a 12.9 @ 108

All of this was with a cai/tune, off-road h pipe, and stock axle backs. The tune was the c&l canned 91 octane tune, not a custom brenspeed or bamachips tune.

I don't know how you only chirped going into second with the stock tires. My car tries to get sideways everytime I shift into second at the strip. I've even tried shifting really early, 5k rpms, and the rear tires still spun and kicked the rear end to the side.

Must be one well prepped track. Even with 3.31's, I'd spin if I launched above 1500 RPMs, and I'd go a bit sideways in 2nd. With the 4.10's in the '05, I spun all the way down the track if I didn't baby it off the line. That was on KDW2's, at that.

I agree. I'm hoping my home town track is better this year as they just replaced the asphalt from start to 1/8 mile. The track opens this weekend so I'm excited to see how much better it is.

The two types of launching I have really tried.

Hold it at 4-5k and slip the clutch all through first (adjusting the clutch position for wheelspin).

Hold it at 1.5-3k (depending on traction) and slip the clutch in to get weight transfer to the rear and then floor it, again adjusting the clutch for wheelspin.

I prefer the second and aim for a slight amount of wheelspin to make sure I don't bog, the key here is getting used to how long it takes to get off the line to time the lights.

try some et streets. . they suck in the wet weather, but on dry they ROCK! even with 515rwhp on the street, if they are hot absolutely no spin even hammering a power shift at 6k, if they are cold i get a very small chirp.

I think my biggest problem was anxiety and adrenline. Yesterday I practiced launching a couple times at a stop sign (no traffic around and did not go over speed limit). I think it was a near perfect launch. I reved to 2500 when I launched. Very little wheel spin. Chirped tires a little.

:Track: and that will tell you how close to "perfect" your launches are! Let us know your improvements next time:nice:

I probably did a good 10-13 second burnout prior to those runs, too.

I've said in previous posts that I launched at around 4500-5000 rpms and slipped the clutch through first, slammed into second and only chirped, and then slammed it into third and crossed the traps at the top of third.

Nice runs man! I think the thread starters problem is tires, and lack of a good track. I've noticed that sometimes the track I go to really sucks and sometimes its good. Get 50 runs under your belt and then you got something.
