well i have a 1964 ranchero with a 302 and i think something is weird with the distributor, because everytime i plug the vacum advance to the carb the idle gets really high? maybe some one could help me with this problem if its not the distributor? thank you

That is exaclty what it is suppose to do if you hook it up to a manifold vacuum souce. It makes the engine have a smoother idle by advancing the timing. The more gas you give it, the less vaccuum it will have and therefore less of an advance on the timing. If you hook it up to a ported vacuum source, the more gas you give it, the more it will advance the timing. At idle, it will not advance the timing at all.
