ME and my buddy are opening our own shop for performance upgrades and custom fabrication. Now, I am saving money for a new motor........5.4 DOHC Do you think this will be a straight drop in to my 96 Cobra (if it isnt totaled)? Idealy, I want to Stroke and Bore the block a little, to like a 5.7, P&P the heads, Crower Cams, Custom dual stage manifold (yes, like on the taurus SHO's!), Forged Crank, and finished off with 10:1 compression.......then.........down the compression to 8.3 or 8.4 and.......yes thats right Turbo. I know this sounds crazy and of course lots of minor things have to be worked out, but between me and the Mike's Garage Crew we can get it done.....goal: Completion by April 2007. (gotta be realistic)

    Whatcha all think?

I think all the ricers will most definately be ...... :owned:

My buddy owns a 50 acre Junkyard, and they have a whole warehouse of ready motors. Everything from a Geo 3 to a 427 CJ. I know they sell Northstar 4.9's for 700, 350's for around 300, 351 W for 400 or so and I saw a couple 4.6's for under 600. I have only seen 2 5.4's, both from lightinings, they were under 900. no trans of course on any of these, tranny attached, add 200-500 bucks.

Lightnings are 2 valve heads.... the Navigator has a 4v 5.4... but the deck height is to tall to fit under a stock hood.

I'd say it's possible, with say, a Cobra R hood.

I can't wait until SVT makes Ford GT parts available in the FRPP catalogue....especially crate motors. They'll sell like hotcakes...:)

YEa they will, yea I forgot about the sohc 54, I dont know why I was thinking that it was dohc. Anyways, I was thinking of either buying the 54sohc or a 54dohc and building it up over time. Port the heads, get some crower cams, send the block out to get bored out and acid cleaned, same with the ported heads, Manifold, and headers. Headers will be custom made on my autoCad machine at school and same with the dual stage intake manifold. forged crank, custom pistons and rods, possibly TT, but that would be an added project to set that up. Anyways, as far as the hood goes, I was thinking of either putting a short 3inch cowl or changing the mounting points to open like a corvette, and have a tall 3 or 4 inch scoop on it. IT would be pretty tight. Then of course, I would rebuild the tranny, and the drivetrain. Rebuild the 8.8 and drop in 4.10's or higher (dont know how high they go) and maybe go with a detroit locker........ not sure how that would work out though. The cops would definately hear me commin down the street. no nitrous though, I want this car to be all motor.
what do you guys think? of course there are hundreds of details to be worked out, but it is a work in progress, gotta get money first :)

5.4 Navigator 4V engines are not hard to come by... www.KarKraft.com sells them all the time. Here is a low mileage(442) one for $3295

I drove a 98 GT with a navigator 5.4 dohc back in 2000. The guys name was Van Bracken from Houston. He had grenaded his 4.6sohc spraying it.

He used a cobra r hood from ford motorsport and fabbed up some sheet metal intake. The car pulled pretty damn good all motor, and it even had 3.27 gearing; could have used 4.10s.

Yes, it sounds quite crazy (not impossible, but not even sort of easy). To do all the things you are talking about doing will require serious cubic dollars - to say nothing of time and effort. In addition to the motor, everything else in the drivetrain will have to upgraded. Everything.

From a pure physical standpoint, the 5.4 4V will fit, but its quite tight. For example, you would not be able to remove a valve cover with the motor in the car (barely room with a 4.6).

Dumb question I know but I'm bored :D

I was wondering if the intakes was completely different on the 2V 5.4 heads and the 4v 5.4 heads. I'm just wondering about swaping in a set on a Lightning and using the stock S/C. It would probly be easier to swap a KB on it and a better heat exchanger but I was just curious :D
