Can anyone steeeer me in the right direction if this is the right process to burnout if you dont have a trans break. :Track: :Track: :Track: :Track: 1- engage clutch 2- clutch engaged, shift to first 3- REV RPMS, disengage clutch 4- slam break, while accelerating 5- Let go of break, clutch, shift 2nd (with or without accelerating?) 6- back on break to continue warming up tires in 2nd. 7- release break, move forward, clutch in 8- stage Now my question is #5 with or without acceleration and a) Wouldnt this take a huge toll on your breaks? b) Wouldnt the car budge forward too far if you dont do 4-5-6 quick enough? Are there any better ways to light up your tires with a 5spd? -rS
Forget first gear, just dump it while in second and get on the brakes. Let up a little bit so as not to fry your rear brakes and when your finished roll out of the burnout. I've never tried the heel/toe method, for a burnout....but really I never felt I needed to.
heel toe is the easiest for me anyways... right foot heal on the brake, toe on the gas. Rev to 5000 or so and dump the clutch and the tires should spin and the car shouldnt move. Either that or dump it high in the RPM. and then left foot on the brake fast. Dont try and shift 2nd in a burnout. Fast way to mess something up.
Agreed, trying to go from 1 to 2 during a burnout is a good way to fry your clutch. Before I had my line lock I would just push the clutch in, bring the rpms up to around 5k, dump the clutch and get on the break with the left foot. But I am lazy and got a line lock and now it is super easy, and saves your rear brakes some.
i have a hard time with the heel-toe method also, but i also have only tried a couple brakestands for the sake of my (expensive ass) new tires. as for the toll on the brakes, if you think about how many times your drums go around your pads every time you come to a stop (especially from highway speed), a few second burnout is nothing.

heel toe dont work for me i tried it! but my size 12 boats get in the way and all it does is fry the clutch!
I know guys with size 14s who can heal toe it... I had issues the first few times, but figured out the best way to do it, and have no issues now. If your feet are "that big" then don't use the heal/toe, use more of the sides of your feet, can be done just the same. Also on the street or with water the tires should go up real fast...
Like the other people said, never shift during a burnout. If you're on street tires, 1st gear will work, and you just want to clean the tires off, not do a real burnout. You can practice and learn the heel-toe, or side-step method which is when you use the sides of your right foot like 25th mentioned. With 1st gear burnouts I use the side-step method because the car usually makes a big leap in 1st when you jump over to the brake with your left foot. In water it would be a different story, but I'm used to the street. With slicks, or if you're just doing a burnout for show, use 2nd gear like millhouse described. For 2nd gear I usually jump over with my left foot because it requires more throttle and it's easier to modulate the brake and gas with 2 feet. Also, if you do it right, the tires will break loose much faster so the car won't make a jump like in 1st, it almost just sits there for a second.
I think the heel/toe or sidestep way is the only way to do a burnout. The very first time i ever did a burnout was just jumping on the break after dropping the clutch. Not only is it violent but the car moves all over the place. Not only forward...but normally it gets cocked off sideways too. I use the sidestep method with the sides of my feet most times...and if i need to modulate the throttle a little more i use the heel/toe method. Put it in 2nd gear...rev to 4-5k and dump the clutch....pretty straight forward.
If your running street tires, drive around the water box and pe-stage and then stage. The compound on street tires becomes slippery when doing a burn out. Plus the tread depth on street tires are going to bring the water up to the starting line and make you spin anyways. A friend of mine drives around the water box with street tires and runs low 13's with his Parnelli Jones 2007 Mustang. If your running drag radials, dot slicks, or slicks, Rip it once through the water box and roll out about 3- 6 feet. Shift into 2nd Bring your rpms up to 4000 and dump the clutch Have your drivers side mirror tilted down so you can see your rear tire When they start to show some good smoke, roll out of the burn out and into pre-stage. Also, if your not running skinnies on the fronts, drive around the water box and back in. Front street tires will also bring water to the line. A line lock is the way to go when doing a burn out for drag racing purposes.
i highly recommend spending the few dollars on line lock. you'll have much better control over the car (safety wise) and you won't be beating the crap out of your brakes. i love my line lock and it wasn't very expensive.
i just mash the brake pedal hard with my right heel and rev with my toes. pop it in 2nd and rev it to around 4k and pop the clutch quick. the tires will turn over and i keep holding the brake with my heel and adjust the gas during the burnout, when i am done i let off the brake and roll forward.
i can't heel toe with my 15's but i did do the cover half the brake and gas with one foot. roll the right side of my foot more towards the gas and dump on that ****. worked okay but i still need to install my linelock.
yeah i wear size 14 and 15 shoes depending on brand, and i can do the heel toe method, so there is no reason why anybody else cant , unless they have bigger feet than me. I usually start out in first then i use my right foot to control brake and gas, then i can shift and use the clutch with my left leg. I never had any problems this way. and i have about 10 friends that can vouch for the 4 gear burnout i did one nite. LOL wish i had a camera for that.
You guys realize during the burnout/shift thing, the tires stop in each gear. So why not just try and start it in 4th?
