Drivetrain 89 Mustang Shift Linkage

I was driving the car today and I shifted into 3rd and it went up but didn't do anything then I put it in 4th and it was fine. Then it would only stay in 2nd. I think it's the shifter linkage but I'm not sure

Umm..there is NO shifter linkage. Try again. Pull the console, boot, lower boot, shifter bolts and pull it out. Broke the shifter, the bushing is pooped, or the trans. Let us know.
