Hi Guys
Just joined the forum; bought a 91 5.0 - when i bought it the guy said it needed a battery.
Day 1 - drove it home about 10 minutes to my work - an hour later went to start it and it was dead; jumped it and drove it 30 minutes home stopped a bought a new battery 5 minutes from my house. As I was driving it down the road it started to lose power and when i put the headlights on or the signal it damn near killed the car. Just barely made it home before the car died.
Put a new battery in it and it drove fine. Drove it to work 30 minutes - it started at the end of the day but i noticed the battery indicator was dipping - made it about 10 minutes from work and the car was dead - assumed the battery was not being charged by the alternator.
put the battery on a charger hoping i didn't kill that totally. I put a new alternator in the car.
I drove the car about 25 minutes to the store and came out 30 minutes later and the car wouldn't even turn over. Called AAA out and they tested the battery said it was hot (125 degrees) but that it was charged up showing 440 CCA battery is rated @ 500 CCA. He tested the started and everything was normal with that. I asked him to test my brand new alternator and he stated that it did not show it was working properly. It showed no voltage.
I was able to jump start the car and drive it home the 25 minutes with no issues; as soon as I got it in the garage and shut it off I tried to restart and the car would not even turn over.
Today I went into the garage and turned they key over and it fired up.....
Any help or path to send me down?
I was going to replace the voltage regulator connector and/or the alternator rectifier plug. It looks like someone had packed this plug full of electrical grease at one point.
Also is there a starter solenoid I should be checking? When the car is on the battery indicator only shows about 1/4 - 1/3 the way charged it is on the A of normal
THANK YOU
