i seem to have a quirky shifter. i put the car in park, shut it off, and when i try to restart it sometimes it wont sense that its in park until i play with the lever a little bit. i seem to have to force it forward until i hear a kind of dull metallic ping or thud. and then it starts.

    thoughts?

That would be the neutral safety switch. I don't know anything about it other than what it does. Damn I'm not very helpful today...

It is most likely the neutral safety switch, which is on the drivers side of the trans. I think it can be changed relatively easily if needed.
