I am sure some of you know what I am talking about. That hazy catarac looking film that develops on our tails? Anyone know of any good way to clean that off? I have tried cleaner wax with no change.... It is annoying me. I have new wheels, new paint, new headlights, new fogs, new corners, and hazy freaking tails. I would replace them but the 94-95 tails are way too expensive and I refuse to go to the "mod" tails.
+1 for the sandpaper thats what I did to mine. When I got paint they did one coat of black and a few clear coats and they are sparkly and smoke
To experiment a bit should I try 2000 grit? since its not that bad but working its way up from the bottom(dont understand why)
if you use 2000 grit itwill take you an hour to do one light. Believe me thats what I did I was tired after that. also try wet sanding. I have a thread around about that before and after pics.
I use PB SSR 2.5, followed by SMR, VM Glaze and then an acyrlic sealant. Just another option. It's more ideal to use 'chemical' cleaning than an abrasive per se. Good luck.
Autogeek probably has most of it. I'd note that if you're a detailing nut, you have this stuff lying around. I would not go out and just buy it for doing lights (that's well over 50 bucks worth of product, shipping not included). If you have any friends with 'Klasse All In One', it is very good at chemical cleaning. I use it on mildly-hazed lenses. If that doesnt take care of it, then the 2.5 (which does have some abrasives, though it's mild compared to many products) does very well. If this thread gets Danny's attention (Wytstang), he will know what you can get locally that works well. I just use what I have in my arsenal and am not sure what non-mail order products work. Or just PM Danny if no one is sure - he's very up on detailing products and uses different items than I do. The chemical cleaning is definitely the way to go though IMHO. That was the only real point I was trying to make.
i had the same problem with my tails, sanded them with 1000grit, sprayed with nightshades, then cleared. Looks way better than stock.
First thing that comes to mind that would work and is available pretty much anywhere is Megs ScratchX. It's designed to work well by hand with some elbow grease of course and should remove the haze. Like JT I went the chemical route and use VM with my buffer and they are a bright ruby red again. I'm not sure if maybe Mothers power ball would work and sling crap everywhere but that is an option to speed up the process.
Also chrome cleaner can also get the job done as well (if yiou have any laying around). I did that on my headlights to remove that yellowing crap and it did a great job.
THanks alot wytstang I will definately try that today. I have some chrome cleaner to try, if not I will try the online stuff Hissin mentioned.
The Scratch X Danny mentioned would be something I would try as well. You can get it at Wallymart here (it's inexpensive). I just dont want you to spend a whole lot of money on stuff that you otherwise might not use (it would be like buying a machine shop so you can make one bracket). Now if you enjoy detailing and wanna try some new (and what Danny and I consider better) stuff, then by all means order away. You'll like the boutique products I'm sure.
Acually I really enjoy detailing my car and so forth. Seeing as my chairs suck I always keep the outside spotless. I get compliments on the car EVERYDAY! Because it is always clean, because little things bother me. And that hase PISSES ME OFF!! lol I will try these things out first then the online stuff.
Try the Mothers Aluminum and Mag Wheel Polish first. I just did it to a set of 94/5 tails that I bought at the swap meet today. It worked GREAT!!!! The lenses are flawless, now. Looked pretty cruddy, before I started. Nice! Thaks for the info, guys!
i dunno if ne one said this, but rubbing compound and the rough inside of a sock works great.. i did it on my 5.0 headlights and it got all the film off. Just a little elbow grease n it came right off. like new now.. Just my 2 cents
Ok so I went out and got Meg ScrathX and I have to say, I am impressed. It did a good job. So I hit it with that some turtle wax polishing compound and a super strong Noxon 7 Metal cleaner/ polish I use on my wheels and it is noticeably better considering the half ass job I did. Tomorrow I will hit it with everything in my arsenal and see how it comes out. Thanx guys!
