I’m a newbie to Fords & Mustangs…. Is it just me or does the AMC Javelin look like a distant cousin of a 71-73 Mustang Sportroof?
Does anyone agree with me & is there any link to the 2 cars?

    Nope.

But I happen to know that a certain SVT Forum member (who comes to this Forum to visit and see what his girlfriend is up to- when the Army lets him see Stangnet on the Baghdad network) is getting a '72 AMX for his next project car. Seems his Dad picked one up that is "just too nice" to be used as a parts donor for the family dirt-track machine. :p

though they do look very similar and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if there were some mechanical bits that are interchangeable, AMC was known to use a few components from the Big 3 on occasion (ford carbs and igintions for instance), the 2 cars are not all related but i can see how they might appear that way. it also wouldn't suprise me if either Ford or AMC had a spy in the design for either car (or both)

Thanks bnickel, I was beginning to think I was crazy.....lol

I don't think they look exactly alike but, a few things around the cars & general shape just remind me of one another.

I use to be a Chevy guy until lately....now I like the Muscle cars off the beat'n path from what everyone else has. I'm getting so sick of Camaros & other played out GM cars. I'm really diggin the AMC's, 71-73 Mustangs, Cougars, Mavricks, etc.

Please don't kill me, but it kind of reminds me of the offspring of a mustang and a camaro.

Funny you should say that, because that actually happened one time, the result was the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), the ninth Nimitz-class supercarrier. Coincidence  I think not :flag:

Wow! If Andy thinks the 71-73 Stangs were "Super-Carrier" sized; can you imagine what he'd say looking at my "BBC"? "Super-Carrier with another half a foot tacked on!

ummm, yes it is. your car is like a mile long and mine's only about a 1/4 mile long. :D

actually about the same as the diff between a 69 stang and 69 coug vs a 73 stang and 73 coug. the 69 coug about 4" longer overall than the 69 stang and i believe the same holds true for the 73's as well.

Okay, okay. So (according to the Measurements" page on TCCN2) my 73 is 5.7 inches longer than your 69.... Most of that is in the front bumper!

    Oh, By the Way!

If you ever find yourself in the position of needing this information:

Know the story about the front hub on Granadas being larger than on Stangs? It's even worse on the AMC vehicles. Don't ask me how I know this, but While the bolt-circle diameter is the same between AMC's and small/intermediate V-8 Fords; the AMC hub is freakin' HUGE! If, in the middle of the night on a dark road on the west side of Tucson, you find yourself having to use/force a '73 Gran Torino spare tire on your girlfriend's '76 Gremlin to get it off the road and home; you will destroy both the Ford rim and the AMC brake drum when you cut/pry them apart!

Again, please don't ask me how I know........ :nonono:

okay, well i'll give you that the front bumper is big enough to send a mack truck running for cover.

Gotta love those early 5MPH bumpers. You don't need to pack a folding chair; just park the nose of the car in the shade, sit down on the 10" deep bumper, and lean back against the headlight surround as you have your beer. :nice:
