automatic transmission question

I have a aod transmission I bought from a friend to put in my 89 stang. When I installed the torque converter into the bell housing, I noticed the transmission in neutral would only turn one direction. I thought It was supposed to turn frelly clockwise and counter clockwise.

What would be causing this problem?

You should be able to turn it freely in the normal direction of rotation. Not sure about backwards, but there is a sprag clutch in the tc and at least one in the trans that keeps some things from turning backwards. This may be it. I would have to review the element status to be sure.
