While giving my new 2007 GT a good going over tonight I found a small 1" long razor cut in the passenger seat bottom. It doesn't go all the way through and it's a little hard to see but it's absolutely there. My Mustang is brand new, just took delivery yesterday so this doesn't make me too happy. I'm sure it will be fine for a while but it's sure to start coming apart sometime down the road.

I don't know if I want to take it back to the Ford dealer (65 miles away) and have them make it worse by trying to fix it. I guess I could 'yell and scream' and have the seat bottom replaced but that becomes a pain as well, especially with the distance involved.

Here is my question, there a source for factory 'take off' seats? If I could buy a new 'take off' I'd just replace it myself and be done with it. My interior is dark charcoal leather.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

www.newtakeoff.com has seat covers, but a set is $350. I don't know if they would sell just the passenger seat bottom separately, but you could always ask.

Take it back fast, or they will say you did it. Its a new car and you shouldn't have to pay for anything. Have them get you a new seat cover. Isn't there some way you can get another car (beg, borrow, steal) in the meantime? Something like that would really get under my skin.

Only problem is when you take delivery of the vehicle, you are now responcible for any defects. That's why they tell you to look over it very good before leaving, because after that, it's your deal, or your insurance. That's what I've always been told, and I go over the vehicle with a fine tooth comb.

That's what they tell you. But won't definitely stick to that. They want you to buy again. When I brought home my first mustang, I picked it up from a dealer about 60 miles away. Found a scratch on a rear quarter panel. Called them the next day, and they said just bring it back and they'll take care of it.

Just report it ASAP. Get it on the books. If they refuse, try going higher than dealership level. Call regional or something and complain. Your brand new car should be BRAND NEW, not new with a few defects.

Well here's my update. I called the dealer and they are going to take my word and order a new bottom cover. I can get it replaced when I take it in for it's first service. So, good service from Ford of Clermont!

But, I also called people at "New Take Off" and ordered a brand new matching 'take off' seat bottom for $45.00. I figured it was good (and cheap)insurance just in case the dealer drops the ball and in any event I'll at least have some matching leather in case I ever need to repair something else.

Thanks for the advice and comments!

its not it's (means it is) Sorry, that's a pet peeve of mine.
Definitely make the dealer fix it. And make certain he puts the bottom on correctly. I had one replaced and it did not fit like factory.
The tech has to know what he is doing.

"but it's sure to start coming apart sometime down the road"

So what is your problem with the way I worded the sentence? Would you prefer if I wrote "but it is sure to start coming apart sometime down the road"?

    I'm sorry that's a pet peeve of yours:rlaugh:

I think you could use it'll in that spot instead it's.

so perhaps it'll be sure to start coming apart.

Contractions are ass anyways but hey we all use them.

I'm talking about "taking it in for it's first service." It's means it is.
taking it in for it is first service.
The word should be its, shows possession.
I said this was a pet peeve of mine. I see it all the time. I teach journalism and see this many, many times. I mean no offense.

My guess is that one of the morons at the dealership damaged the seat when he used a knife to remove the protective plastic from the seat, so they should fix it.

I'm thinking that you did the right thing by getting a backup cover. My dealer tried to fix the bottom of my passenger's seat (also dark charcoal) because the leather cover of the lower portion didn't fit tightly against the foam padding underneath. The drivers seat was fine but the passengers cover was visibly loose. The dealer's body shop got Ford to agree to replace it. They ordered the cover and when they got done it looked absolutely terrible. They ended up taking a seat from a new car on the sales lot (even let me go with the body shop manager to select the donor seat myself) and replacing the whole thing. I would consider asking the dealer to outsource the job to a reputable upholstery shop.

I feel your pain, that was exactly what I feared would happen to me, them making it worse rather than better. I've usually found that in most cases I've been better off doing things correctly myself than being disappointed in the lack of craftmanship of others. That's why I ordered the seat bottom.

the reason it was loose is most likely becasue they failed to use the hog rings correctly. i have a buddy that owns an upholstry shop, and he does warranty work for many dealers after they cant figure out why the cover is loose on the seat after they attempted to fix it.
